1. Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the StarTech.com 8-in-1 Mini Docking Station, Model 120B-USBC-MULTIPORT. This device expands the connectivity of your USB-C or Thunderbolt 3/4 enabled laptop, offering dual 4K 60Hz HDMI video output, a USB 5Gbps hub, 100W Power Delivery passthrough, Gigabit Ethernet, and SD/MicroSD card readers.

2. Product Overview

2.1 Port Layout

• USB Type-C (Host Connection): Integrated 12-inch (30cm) cable for connecting to your laptop.
• USB Type-C (Power Delivery): Supports 100W Power Delivery 3.0 passthrough (15W reserved for adapter, up to 85W for laptop charging).

3. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps to set up your StarTech.com 8-in-1 Mini Docking Station.

3.2 Connecting the Docking Station

1. Connect to Host Laptop: Plug the integrated USB-C host cable from the docking station into an available USB-C or Thunderbolt 3/4 port on your laptop.
2. Connect Displays: Connect your HDMI monitors to the two HDMI 2.0 ports on the docking station using HDMI cables (sold separately). Ensure your laptop's GPU supports DP 1.4 with DSC for dual 4K 60Hz output.
3. Connect Power (Optional but Recommended): For laptop charging and stable operation, connect a USB-C power adapter (not included) to the USB Type-C Power Delivery port on the docking station. This enables up to 85W passthrough charging for your laptop.
4. Connect Peripherals:
   • For wired internet, connect an Ethernet cable to the Gigabit Ethernet port.
   • Connect USB peripherals (e.g., keyboard, mouse, external drives) to the USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports.
   • Insert SD or MicroSD cards into the respective card reader slots.
5. Driver Installation: The docking station typically supports automatic driver installation (Plug and Play) on compatible operating systems. If prompted, follow the on-screen instructions.

4. Operation

4.1 Display Configuration

Once connected, your operating system should detect the external displays. You can configure display settings (e.g., extend, duplicate, primary display) through your system's display settings.

• Windows: Right-click on the desktop, select "Display settings."
• macOS: Go to "System Preferences" > "Displays."
• ChromeOS/Ubuntu: Access display settings through the system menu.

For optimal 4K 60Hz dual display performance, ensure your laptop supports DisplayPort 1.4 with Display Stream Compression (DSC) and Multi-Stream Transport (MST).

4.2 USB Peripherals and Data Transfer

Connect your USB devices to the USB Type-A ports. The port marked with a battery icon supports BC 1.2 for faster charging of compatible devices.

4.3 Network Connectivity

The Gigabit Ethernet port provides a stable and high-speed wired network connection. Once connected, your operating system should automatically detect the network adapter.

4.4 SD/MicroSD Card Readers

Insert your SD or MicroSD cards into the corresponding slots. The cards will appear as removable drives in your operating system's file explorer.

5. Power Delivery

The docking station supports USB Power Delivery 3.0 passthrough. When an external USB-C power adapter (100W recommended) is connected to the docking station's USB-C PD port, it can charge your laptop while providing power to the docking station and connected peripherals.

• 15W is reserved for the docking station's operation.
• Up to 85W is available for laptop charging.

Using an external power adapter is highly recommended for stable performance, especially when using multiple high-power peripherals or dual displays.

6. Compatibility

The docking station is compatible with a wide range of devices and operating systems:

• Host Connection: USB-C enabled laptops and Thunderbolt 3/4/USB4 laptops.
• Operating Systems: Windows (7, 8, 8.1, 10, 11), Chrome OS, Ubuntu, macOS, iPadOS, Android.
• Tested Brands: HP, Dell, Lenovo, Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 and up / Pro 7 and up, Chromebooks.

8. Troubleshooting

• No Display Output:
  • Ensure the USB-C host cable is securely connected to both the docking station and your laptop.
  • Verify that your laptop's USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode. Not all USB-C ports support video output.
  • Check HDMI cable connections to both the docking station and the monitors.
  • Update your laptop's graphics drivers.
  • If using dual 4K 60Hz, confirm your laptop's GPU supports DP 1.4 with DSC and MST. Lower resolutions might be required if not.
  • Connect an external USB-C power adapter to the docking station to ensure sufficient power.
• USB Devices Not Detected:
  • Ensure the docking station is properly connected to your laptop.
  • Try connecting the USB device directly to your laptop to confirm it functions.
  • Connect an external USB-C power adapter to the docking station, especially for high-power USB devices.
• Network Connection Issues:
  • Verify the Ethernet cable is securely connected to both the docking station and your router/switch.
  • Check your laptop's network settings.
  • Test the Ethernet cable with another device if possible.
• Laptop Not Charging:
  • Ensure an external USB-C power adapter is connected to the docking station's PD port.
  • Verify the power adapter is functional and provides sufficient wattage (100W recommended).
  • Confirm your laptop supports USB-C Power Delivery.

9. Maintenance

• Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the docking station. Avoid liquid cleaners or solvents.
• Storage: Store the device in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
• Cable Care: Avoid bending or crimping the integrated USB-C cable excessively to prevent internal damage.
