5.2 Espresso Brewing
- Prepare Portafilter: Grind fresh coffee beans and dose the appropriate amount into your portafilter basket. Tamp evenly.
- Purge Group Head: Briefly lift the brew lever to flush any stale water from the group head.
- Insert Portafilter: Securely insert the portafilter into the E61 group head.
- Start Extraction: Place your cup(s) under the portafilter spouts. Lift the brew lever fully to begin extraction.
- Monitor Shot: Observe the flow and color of the espresso. Aim for a shot time of 20-30 seconds for a balanced extraction.
- Stop Extraction: Lower the brew lever to stop the flow once the desired volume is reached.
5.3 Milk Steaming
- Prepare Milk: Fill a stainless steel milk pitcher with cold milk.
- Purge Steam Wand: Briefly open the steam valve to purge any condensed water from the wand. Close the valve.
- Position Wand: Submerge the tip of the steam wand just below the surface of the milk.
- Steam Milk: Fully open the steam valve. Lower the pitcher slightly to introduce air for aeration, then raise it to create a swirling vortex for texturing.
- Monitor Temperature: Steam until the milk reaches the desired temperature (typically 140-150°F or 60-65°C).
- Clean Wand: Immediately wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth and purge briefly to clear any milk residue.
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance is crucial for the performance and longevity of your Appartamento machine.
6.1 Regular Cleaning
- Daily: Wipe down the machine exterior, steam wand, and drip tray. Empty and rinse the drip tray.
- Weekly: Backflush the group head using the blind basket and a suitable espresso machine detergent. Clean the portafilters and baskets. Scrub the group head.
- Monthly: Wash the water tank thoroughly with mild soap and water.
- Quarterly/Bi-annually: Perform a deeper cleaning, including descaling if necessary (see 6.2).
6.2 Water Quality
Using filtered or soft water is highly recommended to prevent mineral buildup (scale) in the boiler and internal components. Hard water can significantly reduce the lifespan of your machine and affect coffee taste. Consider using a water filter in the reservoir or a dedicated water softening system.
7. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter. For more complex problems, please contact customer support.
- No Water Flow from Group Head: Check water reservoir level. Ensure the pump is priming correctly. Descale if necessary.
- Weak Steam Pressure: Ensure the machine is fully heated. Check for blockages in the steam wand tip. Descale if necessary.
- Espresso Tastes Sour/Bitter: Adjust grind size (finer for sour, coarser for bitter). Check dose and tamp consistency. Ensure proper extraction time.
- Machine Overheating/Shutting Down: Ensure adequate ventilation. Check the eco switch setting (if applicable). This may indicate a need for descaling or professional service if persistent.
- Odd Smell/Particles in Water: Thoroughly flush the machine. If persistent, this may indicate residual manufacturing materials or a need for professional inspection.
