4. Setup

4.1 Battery Installation

The Fyearfly ST212 requires two AAA batteries for operation.

  1. Locate the battery cover on the back of the device.
  2. Use a screwdriver to open the battery cover.
  3. Insert two AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  4. Securely close the battery cover.

Note: Replace batteries promptly when the low battery indicator appears on the display to maintain measurement accuracy.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Power On/Off and Function Selection

  • Power On: Short press the SEL button.
  • Power Off: Short press the SEL button again. The meter also features an automatic shut-down function if no operation occurs within 15 minutes.
  • Function Selection: After powering on, the meter defaults to AUTO mode. Long press the SEL button to cycle through different measurement functions (e.g., Voltage, Resistance, Diode, Capacitance, Frequency).

5.2 AC/DC Current Measurement

To measure AC or DC current:

  1. Ensure the meter is powered on.
  2. Press the trigger to open the clamp jaw.
  3. Enclose a single conductor (not a bundle of wires) with the clamp jaw. Ensure the jaw is fully closed.
  4. Read the current value on the display. The meter will automatically detect AC or DC current.

5.3 AC/DC Voltage Measurement

To measure AC or DC voltage:

  1. Connect the red test lead to the VΩHz input jack and the black test lead to the COM input jack.
  2. Long press the SEL button until the voltage measurement mode is selected (indicated by 'V' or 'mV' on the display).
  3. Touch the test probes to the points in the circuit where you want to measure voltage.
  4. Read the voltage value on the display. The meter will automatically detect AC or DC voltage.

5.4 Resistance, Capacitance, Diode, and Frequency Measurement

For these measurements, connect the test leads as described for voltage measurement (red to VΩHz, black to COM).

  • Resistance (Ω): Long press SEL to select resistance mode. Touch probes to the component.
  • Capacitance (F): Long press SEL to select capacitance mode. Touch probes to the capacitor (ensure it's discharged).
  • Diode (►|): Long press SEL to select diode mode. Touch probes across the diode.
  • Frequency (Hz): Long press SEL to select frequency mode. Touch probes to the signal source.

5.5 Non-Contact Voltage (NCV) Detection

The NCV function allows for safe detection of AC voltage without direct contact.

  1. Long press the REL/NCV button to enter NCV mode.
  2. Move the NCV induction zone (top part of the clamp head) close to the conductor or power outlet.
  3. If AC voltage is detected, the NCV/On-off indicator light will flash, and an audible alarm will sound. The display will show 'EF'.

5.6 Live Wire Identification

This function helps distinguish between live (fire) and neutral (zero) wires.

  1. Connect the red test lead to the VΩHz input jack and the black test lead to the COM input jack.
  2. Long press the SEL button until the 'Live' mode is selected.
  3. Insert the red test lead into the suspected wire's terminal.
  4. If the red light flashes and a buzzing sound is heard, it indicates a live wire. If there is no flicker and no buzzing sound, it indicates a neutral wire.

5.7 Additional Functions

  • Data Retention (HOLD): Short press the Flashlight/Data Hold button to freeze the current reading on the display. Press again to release.
  • Flashlight: Long press the Flashlight/Data Hold button to turn the flashlight on or off.
  • Relative Measurement (REL): Short press the REL/NCV button to enter relative measurement mode. This displays the difference between the current reading and a stored reference value.
  • Automatic Shut-down: The meter will automatically power off after approximately 15 minutes of inactivity to conserve battery life.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning

To clean the meter, wipe the case with a damp cloth and a mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Ensure the meter is completely dry before use.

6.2 Battery Replacement

When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace the batteries immediately to ensure accurate measurements. Refer to Section 4.1 for battery installation instructions.

7. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Meter does not power on.Dead or incorrectly installed batteries.Check battery polarity or replace batteries.
Inaccurate readings.Low battery, incorrect function selected, external interference.Replace batteries, verify function, move away from strong electromagnetic fields.
No reading in clamp mode.Clamp jaw not fully closed, measuring a bundled cable instead of a single conductor.Ensure jaw is closed and only one conductor is inside.
NCV not detecting voltage.Voltage too low, NCV mode not active.Ensure NCV mode is active (long press REL/NCV), check for higher voltage source.
