Walrus Audio Canvas Stereo Direct Box and Line Isolator User Manual

Model: 900-1065

Product Overview

The Walrus Audio Canvas Stereo Direct Box and Line Isolator is a versatile device designed to provide a pristine sonic foundation for audio signals. It functions as both a Passive Line Isolator (LI) and a Direct Injection (DI) device, converting unbalanced signals into balanced signals suitable for recording interfaces or front-of-house mixers.

This unit is particularly useful for instruments or devices utilizing both left and right outputs, such as amp-in-a-box DSP guitar rigs, keyboards, and other stereo instruments. Its compact, pedal-sized enclosure makes it suitable for integration into existing pedalboards.

Key Features

  • Flat Frequency Response: Delivers a consistent audio signal across the entire audible spectrum, from 20Hz to 20kHz.
  • Unbalanced to Balanced Conversion: Converts standard 1/4-inch unbalanced inputs to professional XLR balanced outputs, ensuring signal integrity over long cable runs.
  • Transformer Isolated Output: Provides electrical isolation to eliminate ground loops and reduce noise.
  • Stereo Amplifier Passthrough (Thru): When the SUM function is disengaged, the left input connects to the left thru, and the right input connects to the right thru, allowing for stereo amplifier setups.
  • Mono Summing (SUM): When the SUM function is engaged, the left and right thru jacks are connected, combining the stereo signals into a single mono output, suitable for single amplifier setups (either thru jack can be used).

Setup

The Canvas Stereo is a passive device and does not require an external power supply for operation. It is designed for straightforward integration into various audio setups.

Connecting Your Device

  1. Input Connection: Connect your instrument or audio source (e.g., guitar pedal, amp modeler) to the 1/4-inch "IN" jacks on the Canvas Stereo. Use the "L" input for the left channel and the "R" input for the right channel for stereo sources.
  2. Output Connection: Connect the XLR "LEFT OUT" and "RIGHT OUT" jacks to your mixer, audio interface, or front-of-house system using standard XLR cables. These outputs provide balanced signals.
  3. Thru Connection (Optional): The 1/4-inch "THRU" jacks allow you to send the input signal directly to another device, such as an amplifier or monitor. Connect the "L THRU" to your left amplifier and "R THRU" to your right amplifier for stereo monitoring.

Operating Instructions

The Canvas Stereo features several switches to optimize your signal for various applications.

Control Functions

  • DI/LI Switch:
    • DI (Direct Injection) Mode: Engaged for instruments with low impedance, such as acoustic guitars or bass guitars. This mode is ideal for converting instrument-level signals to balanced mic-level signals.
    • LI (Line Isolator) Mode: Engaged for high-impedance sources like keyboards, digital guitar systems, or amp modelers. This mode maintains the line-level signal while providing isolation, ensuring a robust and clean signal without overdriving mixer preamps.
  • PAD Switch: Reduces the input signal level by a fixed amount (typically -15dB or -20dB) to prevent clipping when connecting high-output sources. Engage this switch if you experience distortion.
  • GND LIFT (Ground Lift) Switch: Disconnects the ground connection between the input and output to eliminate hum or buzz caused by ground loops. Engage this switch if you hear unwanted noise in your signal.
  • SUM Button: When pressed, this button combines the left and right input signals into a single mono signal, which is then sent to both "THRU" jacks. This is useful for sending a stereo source to a single amplifier or input. When disengaged, the left and right signals remain separate through their respective "THRU" jacks.

Maintenance

The Walrus Audio Canvas Stereo Direct Box is built with durable metal construction designed for longevity. To ensure optimal performance and extend the lifespan of your device, follow these simple maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the exterior of the unit. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, solvents, or excessive moisture, as these can damage the finish or internal components.
  • Storage: Store the unit in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and high humidity. When not in use, it is recommended to disconnect all cables.
  • Handling: While robust, avoid dropping the unit or subjecting it to severe impacts, which could damage the internal circuitry or external casing.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Canvas Stereo Direct Box, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • No Sound Output:
    • Ensure all cables (input, output, thru) are securely connected.
    • Verify that the input source is active and producing a signal.
    • Check the settings on your mixer or audio interface to ensure the correct input channel is selected and gain levels are appropriate.
  • Hum or Buzzing Noise:
    • Engage the GND LIFT switch. This is often effective in eliminating ground loop hum.
    • Ensure all audio equipment in your signal chain is properly grounded.
    • Try using different cables to rule out faulty cabling.
  • Distorted or Clipped Sound:
    • Engage the PAD switch to attenuate high-level input signals.
    • Ensure the input signal level from your source is not excessively high.
    • Check the input gain settings on your mixer or audio interface.
  • Incorrect Stereo/Mono Behavior:
    • Verify the state of the SUM button. If you desire separate stereo signals through the thru jacks, ensure the SUM button is disengaged. If you need a combined mono signal, ensure it is engaged.
