Operating Instructions

General Sharpening (Carbide and Ceramic V-Notch Slots)

  1. Place the sharpener on a flat, stable surface. Hold the sharpener firmly with one hand.
  2. Insert the blade fully and vertically into the desired V-notch slot. Use the Coarse Carbide V-Notch (labeled '1') for very dull or damaged blades to quickly set a new edge. Use the Fine Ceramic V-Notch (labeled '2') for honing and polishing the blade to a smooth, finished edge. Ensure the cutting edge line is parallel to the flat surface.
  3. Pull the full length of the blade through the slot from heel to tip, applying medium, consistent pressure. Repeat 3-5 times for each slot, or until desired sharpness is achieved. Always pull the blade towards you, never push away.

Sharpening Serrations and Gut Hooks (Tapered Diamond Rod)

  1. Carefully extend the tapered diamond rod from its storage slot on the sharpener.
  2. For serrations, slide the rod back and forth several times on each serration you wish to sharpen, using medium pressure.
  3. For gut hooks, use the tapered rod to sharpen the inside curve of the hook.

Sharpening Fishhooks (Diamond Rod with Groove)

  1. Carefully extend the tapered diamond rod. Locate the small groove on the rod.
  2. Place the fishhook into the groove and slide it back and forth to sharpen the point.

Using the Ferro Rod (Fire Starter)

  1. Remove the ferro rod from its storage slot.
  2. Use the tungsten carbide sharpener (or a knife spine) as a striker. If the ferro rod is new, scrape off the protective coating before first use.
  3. Hold the ferro rod at an angle over your tinder. Quickly and firmly scrape the striker down the rod to create sparks. Direct sparks onto the tinder to ignite a fire.

Using the Emergency Whistle

  1. Locate the emergency whistle on the unit.
  2. Blow firmly into the whistle to emit a high-pitched sound for signaling in emergencies.

Maintenance

After each use, wipe the sharpener clean with a damp cloth. Do not immerse the unit in water. Store in a dry place away from extreme temperatures. The carbide and ceramic abrasives are designed for long-lasting performance and do not require replacement under normal use. The ferro rod is consumable and can be replaced if fully used.
