4. Safety Information

  • Power Supply: Use only the provided power adapter. This unit is designed for 115VAC operation with a USA plug and is suitable for use in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It is not compatible with 220-240V electrical systems.
  • Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit. Do not block ventilation openings.
  • Moisture: Do not expose the unit to water or excessive moisture.
  • Servicing: There are no user-serviceable parts inside. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. Opening the unit voids the warranty.
  • Placement: Place the unit on a stable, level surface away from heat sources, direct sunlight, and strong electromagnetic fields.

5. Setup

Follow these steps to set up your Schiit Mani 2 Phono Preamplifier:

  1. Unpack: Carefully remove the Mani 2 and its power adapter from the packaging.
  2. Placement: Position the Mani 2 near your turntable and audio receiver/amplifier. Ensure there is enough space for cable connections and ventilation.
  3. Adjust Dip Switches (Bottom Panel): Before connecting, configure the gain, loading, and low-frequency filter settings using the dip switches located on the bottom of the unit. Refer to Section 6.1 for detailed instructions on these adjustments.
  4. Connect Turntable: Connect the RCA output cables from your turntable to the "IN" RCA jacks on the rear panel of the Mani 2. Ensure left (L) and right (R) channels are correctly matched.
  5. Connect Ground Wire: Connect the ground wire from your turntable to the ground terminal on the rear panel of the Mani 2. This helps reduce hum and noise.
  6. Connect to Amplifier: Connect the "OUT" RCA jacks on the rear panel of the Mani 2 to a line-level input (e.g., "AUX", "CD", "Tuner") on your audio receiver or amplifier. Do not connect to your amplifier's "PHONO" input, as this would result in double pre-amplification.
  7. Connect Power: Connect the provided power adapter to the "AC IN" jack on the rear panel of the Mani 2, then plug the adapter into a suitable 115VAC wall outlet.
  8. Power On: Flip the power switch on the rear panel to the "ON" position. The front panel LED will illuminate.

6. Operating Instructions

Once the Mani 2 is set up and connected, operating it is straightforward. The primary adjustments are made via the dip switches on the bottom panel.

6.1. Adjusting Gain, Loading, and LF Filter

The Mani 2 offers significant flexibility to match various cartridges. These settings are configured using dip switches on the bottom of the unit. Always power off the Mani 2 and disconnect the power adapter before making any adjustments to the dip switches.

Gain Settings

Gain adjusts the amplification level to match your cartridge's output. Refer to your cartridge's specifications for recommended gain. The Mani 2 offers four gain settings:

  • 35dB: Suitable for high-output MM/MI cartridges.
  • 45dB: Common for standard MM/MI cartridges.
  • 50dB: For lower-output MM/MI or higher-output MC cartridges.
  • 60dB: Ideal for low-output MC cartridges.

Consult Figure 2 for the location of the gain dip switches and their corresponding positions for each setting.

Loading Settings (Resistance and Capacitance)

Loading refers to the electrical impedance presented to the cartridge. Correct loading optimizes frequency response and transient behavior. The Mani 2 provides options for both resistive and capacitive loading.

  • Resistive Loading: Choose from 47KΩ (standard for MM/MI), 200Ω, 47Ω, or 38Ω (for MC cartridges).
  • Capacitive Loading: Choose from 47pF, 100pF, 150pF, or 200pF.

The default setting for MM/MI cartridges is typically 47KΩ and 47pF. For MC cartridges, consult the cartridge manufacturer's recommendations. Consult Figure 2 for the location of the loading dip switches and their corresponding positions for each setting.

Low-Frequency (LF) Filter

The LF filter helps mitigate issues caused by warped records or turntable rumble, which can cause excessive woofer excursion. The Mani 2 offers two passive filter options at 15 Hz:

  • 6dB/octave: A gentler filter.
  • 12dB/octave: A steeper filter for more pronounced issues.

If you experience excessive woofer movement or low-frequency distortion, engaging the LF filter may be beneficial. Consult Figure 2 for the location of the filter dip switches.

6.2. Normal Operation

Once all connections and dip switch settings are confirmed:

  1. Ensure your amplifier/receiver is turned off or its volume is set to minimum.
  2. Turn on the Mani 2 using the rear power switch. The front LED will light up.
  3. Turn on your amplifier/receiver and select the input connected to the Mani 2.
  4. Start playing a record on your turntable.
  5. Slowly increase the volume on your amplifier/receiver to your desired listening level.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the unit. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents.
  • Dust: Keep the unit free from dust. Use compressed air to gently clear any dust from ventilation openings.
  • Storage: If storing the unit for an extended period, disconnect it from power and store it in a cool, dry place.

8. Troubleshooting
