5. Setup Instructions

  1. Mounting (Optional): If desired, use the provided screws and nylon spacers to mount the breakout board to a suitable surface. Ensure proper clearance and ventilation.
  2. Connect ATX Power Supply: Carefully align the 24-pin ATX connector from your power supply with the corresponding header on the breakout board. Press firmly until it clicks into place. The board is compatible with 20-pin, 20+4-pin, and 24-pin ATX connectors.
  3. Power On: Connect your ATX power supply to a power outlet. The PS_ON LED on the breakout board will light up, indicating standby power.

6. Operating Instructions

  1. Activating the Power Supply: Press the red latching button switch located on the board. The power supply will turn ON, and the PS_ON LED will turn OFF. All other diagnostic LEDs corresponding to active voltage rails should light up.
  2. Accessing Voltage Rails: Use the screw terminals to connect wires to the desired voltage outputs (+3.3V, +5V, +12V, -12V, GND). Ensure correct polarity and secure connections. Each terminal can handle up to 10 Amperes.
  3. Diagnostic LEDs:
    • When the power supply is ON, the LEDs for +3.3V, +5V, +12V, and -12V should illuminate, indicating that these voltage rails are active.
    • The PS_ON LED lights up when the output is OFF (standby mode) and goes out when the output is ON. This behavior is opposite to other LEDs.
    • If an LED for a specific voltage rail does not light up when the power supply is ON, it indicates a potential fault or absence of that voltage from the ATX power supply.
    • Note: Many newer ATX power supplies no longer provide a -5V output. In such cases, the NC/-V LED will not light up, which is normal and does not indicate a fault.
  4. Deactivating the Power Supply: Press the red latching button switch again to turn the power supply OFF. The PS_ON LED will illuminate, and all other voltage rail LEDs will turn OFF.

8. Troubleshooting

  • No LEDs light up:
    • Ensure the ATX power supply is properly connected to the board and plugged into a working power outlet.
    • Verify the ATX power supply itself is functional.
  • PS_ON LED is ON, but other LEDs are OFF after pressing the switch:
    • This indicates the power supply is in standby mode. Ensure the latching button switch has been pressed to turn the power supply ON. The PS_ON LED should turn OFF when the power supply is active.
  • Specific voltage rail LED is OFF when power supply is ON:
    • This suggests a potential fault with that specific voltage output from your ATX power supply.
    • Exception: The NC/-V LED (for -5V) will not light up if your ATX power supply does not provide a -5V output, which is common in modern power supplies. This is not an indication of a fault.
  • Intermittent power or voltage readings:
    • Check all connections, especially the 24-pin ATX connector, to ensure they are secure.
    • Inspect the screw terminal connections for tightness and proper wire contact.

9. Safety Information

  • Always ensure the ATX power supply is disconnected from the mains power before making or changing any connections to the breakout board.
  • Do not exceed the maximum current rating of 10 Amperes per terminal.
  • Avoid short-circuiting any voltage rails.
  • Keep the board away from moisture and extreme temperatures.
  • This product is intended for use by individuals familiar with basic electronics and electrical safety practices.
