1. Introduction

5. Setup and Wiring

Follow these steps to correctly connect the PWM speed controller:

  1. Identify Terminals: Locate the 'DC IN' terminals for power input and 'MOTOR' terminals for connecting your DC motor or LED. Refer to Figure 3.2 for terminal identification.
  2. Connect Power Input: Connect your DC power supply to the 'DC IN' terminals. Ensure the positive (+) terminal of the power supply connects to the '+' terminal of 'DC IN', and the negative (-) terminal of the power supply connects to the '-' terminal of 'DC IN'.
  3. Connect Load: Connect your DC motor or LED to the 'MOTOR' terminals. Ensure the positive (+) terminal of the motor/LED connects to the '+' terminal of 'MOTOR', and the negative (-) terminal of the motor/LED connects to the '-' terminal of 'MOTOR'.
  4. Low Voltage Input (3V-9V): If your input voltage is between 3V and 9V, a short circuit connection is required. The product is shipped with the short circuit point disconnected by default. Manually connect the short circuit point according to your specific needs for operation within this voltage range. Consult the product diagram for the exact location of the short circuit point.
  5. Grounding Consideration: Note that this controller primarily modulates the negative ground side. If the device you are controlling has its own independent ground (negative) connection that is separate from the power supply's ground, it may not function as expected or may operate at full power, bypassing the control. Ensure your load's negative connection is routed through the controller's 'MOTOR -' terminal for proper modulation.

After all connections are made, you can apply power to the circuit.

6. Operating Instructions

Once the controller is wired and powered, operate it as follows:

  • Power On: Apply power to the 'DC IN' terminals.
  • Adjust Control Knob: Rotate the black knob (potentiometer) clockwise to increase the speed of the connected DC motor or the brightness of the LED. Rotate it counter-clockwise to decrease speed or brightness.
  • Off Position: The control knob typically includes an 'off' position at its minimum rotation, allowing you to completely turn off the connected device without disconnecting power.
  • PWM Duty Cycle: The controller allows for a PWM duty cycle from 1% to 100%, providing fine-grained control over the output.

7. Maintenance

If the load has an independent ground, the controller's modulation may be bypassed.

  • Intermittent Operation or Device Failure:
    • Ensure the load (motor/LED) does not exceed the 5A current limit or 90W power limit.
    • Check for loose connections or damaged wiring.
    • Inspect the controller for any visible signs of damage or overheating.
  • Low Voltage Input (3V-9V) Issues:
    • Confirm that the short circuit point for low voltage input has been manually connected as required.
