3. Setup

3.1 Attaching the Reel to a Fishing Rod

1. Align the reel foot with the reel seat on your fishing rod.

3.2 Spooling Fishing Line

1. Open the bail arm.
2. Tie your chosen fishing line (braid or monofilament) to the spool using an arbor knot or similar secure knot. The Kapstan Elite's CNC aluminum spool is braid-ready, so no backing is required for braid.
3. Close the bail arm.
4. Hold the line under slight tension and begin reeling slowly and steadily, ensuring the line lays evenly on the spool. Fill the spool to approximately 1/8 inch from the rim to prevent line overflow.

3.3 Adjusting Handle Orientation

The Kapstan Elite reel features an ambidextrous design, allowing the handle to be switched for left or right-hand retrieve. To change the handle side, simply unscrew the handle knob on one side, remove the handle, and insert it into the opposite side, then re-secure the knob.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Drag Adjustment

The drag system is located on the top of the spool. Turn the drag knob clockwise to increase drag tension and counter-clockwise to decrease it. Adjust the drag to a setting that allows line to be pulled off the spool under pressure without breaking the line or damaging the reel. A common starting point is setting the drag to approximately one-third of your line's breaking strength.

4.2 Casting

1. Hold the rod and reel comfortably.
2. Open the bail arm.
3. Hold the line against the rod with your index finger.
4. Execute your cast.
5. Important Note on Bail Operation: For Kapstan Elite 5000, 6000, and 8000 models, the bail arm must be closed manually after casting to begin retrieval. Turning the handle will not automatically close the bail on these larger sizes. This is a performance feature for heavy-duty saltwater reels and not a defect. For 3000 and 4000 models, the bail can be closed by turning the handle if preferred.

4.3 Retrieval

Once the bail is closed, turn the handle to retrieve your line. Maintain a steady retrieve speed appropriate for your lure or bait. The smooth gearing ensures efficient line recovery.

5.1 Post-Fishing Care

After each use, especially in saltwater, thoroughly rinse your reel with fresh water. This helps remove salt, sand, and debris that can cause corrosion and wear. Do not use high-pressure water, as this can force water into sealed areas. Allow the reel to air dry completely before storage.

Periodically apply a small amount of high-quality reel grease to the main gear and pinion gear, and a drop of reel oil to the ball bearings and other moving parts.
