Setup
1. Battery Charging
- Connect the 40V Rapid Charger to a standard electrical outlet.
- Slide the 40V 5.0 Ah Lithium Battery into the charger until it clicks into place.
- Allow the battery to charge completely. The charger indicator light will change when charging is complete (refer to charger manual for specific light patterns). Charging typically takes less than 50 minutes.
2. Chain and Bar Installation (if not pre-assembled)
- Ensure the battery is removed from the chainsaw.
- Remove the chain cover by loosening the two nuts with the combination wrench.
- Carefully place the chain around the sprocket and guide bar, ensuring the cutting edges face the correct direction (refer to chain markings).
- Position the guide bar onto the mounting studs.
- Replace the chain cover and hand-tighten the nuts. Do not fully tighten yet.
3. Chain Tensioning
- With the chain cover nuts still loose, use the combination wrench to adjust the chain tensioning screw (located on the side of the chainsaw).
- Turn the screw clockwise to increase tension, counter-clockwise to decrease.
- Proper tension allows the chain to be pulled away from the guide bar by approximately 1/8 to 1/4 inch at the center, but the drive links should not come out of the guide bar groove.
- Once tension is correct, fully tighten the chain cover nuts securely.
4. Adding Bar and Chain Oil
- Ensure the battery is removed.
- Locate the oil reservoir cap (typically on the top or side of the chainsaw body).
- Unscrew the cap and fill the reservoir with high-quality bar and chain oil. Do not use motor oil or waste oil.
- Replace the cap securely. The chainsaw features an automatic oiler to keep the chain lubricated during operation.
Operating Instructions
1. Starting the Chainsaw
- Ensure the chain brake is disengaged (pulled back towards the front handle).
- Insert a fully charged battery into the battery port until it clicks.
- Grip the front handle with your left hand and the rear handle with your right hand.
- Press and hold the trigger lockout button (usually on the side of the rear handle).
- Squeeze the trigger switch to start the chainsaw. Release the lockout button once the saw is running.
2. Cutting Techniques
- Felling: Plan your escape path. Make a notch cut on the side of the tree in the direction of fall, then a felling cut from the opposite side, slightly above the notch.
- Limbing: Remove smaller branches first. Work from the bottom up, keeping the tree trunk between you and the branch being cut.
- Bucking: Cut logs into shorter lengths. Support the log to prevent pinching the guide bar. Be aware of rolling logs.
- Always maintain a firm grip with both hands. Do not overreach.
- Let the saw do the work; do not force it through the wood.
3. Stopping the Chainsaw
Release the trigger switch. The chain will stop immediately. Engage the chain brake by pushing it forward towards the guide bar for added safety when not actively cutting or when moving between cuts.
Maintenance
1. Chain Sharpening
A sharp chain is crucial for safe and efficient cutting. Sharpen the chain regularly or have it professionally sharpened. Refer to the chain manufacturer's specifications for the correct file size and sharpening angles.
2. Guide Bar Maintenance
- Periodically clean the guide bar groove to remove sawdust and debris.
- Flip the guide bar regularly to ensure even wear on both sides.
- Check for burrs on the guide bar rails and file them smooth if present.
3. Cleaning and Storage
- Remove the battery before cleaning.
- Clean the chainsaw exterior with a damp cloth. Remove sawdust and debris from the motor housing and chain area.
- Drain any remaining bar and chain oil if storing for an extended period.
- Store the chainsaw with the scabbard (bar and chain cover) in place, in a dry, secure location away from children and moisture.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Chainsaw does not start | Battery not charged or improperly inserted; Chain brake engaged; Trigger lockout not pressed. | Ensure battery is fully charged and properly seated. Disengage chain brake. Press trigger lockout before squeezing trigger. |
| Chain does not move | Chain brake engaged; Chain tension too tight; Obstruction in chain path. | Disengage chain brake. Adjust chain tension. Remove any obstructions (with battery removed). |
| Poor cutting performance | Dull chain; Incorrect chain tension; Insufficient bar oil. | Sharpen or replace chain. Adjust chain tension. Fill oil reservoir. |
| Oil leakage | Oil cap not secure; Chainsaw stored improperly. | Ensure oil cap is tightly secured. Store chainsaw horizontally on a non-absorbent surface or drain oil if storing for extended periods. |
