Main Components:
- Control Panel: Includes ON/OFF switch, indicator lights, and pressure gauge.
- Portafilter: Holds ground coffee, with two sieve inserts for 1 or 2 cups.
- Steam Wand (2-in-1 High-Pressure Steam Nozzle): For frothing milk and dispensing hot water.
- Removable Water Tank: 1.5-liter capacity.
- Drip Tray: Removable with water level indicator and grid.
- Coffee Spoon with Tamper: For measuring and tamping coffee grounds.
Setup
- Unpacking: Carefully remove all packaging materials. Keep packaging for future storage or disposal.
- Initial Cleaning: Before first use, wash the water tank, portafilter, sieve inserts, and drip tray with warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry. Wipe the exterior of the machine with a damp cloth.
- Positioning: Place the espresso machine on a stable, flat, heat-resistant surface, away from walls and heat sources. Ensure adequate ventilation.
- Fill Water Tank: Remove the water tank from the back of the machine. Fill it with fresh, cold water up to the MAX mark (1.5 liters). Replace the tank securely.
- Priming the Machine:
- Ensure the steam knob is closed.
- Place a large cup or container under the steam wand and another under the coffee spout.
- Plug the machine into a grounded power outlet. Press the ON/OFF switch. The indicator lights will illuminate.
- Once the machine is preheated (indicator light stops blinking), turn the steam knob to open the steam wand. Let water flow through until the tank is almost empty. This primes the pump and removes air from the system.
- Close the steam knob. Refill the water tank. The machine is now ready for use.
Operating Instructions
Making Espresso:
- Preheat: Ensure the machine is plugged in and turned on. Allow it to preheat until the indicator light stops blinking, indicating optimal brewing temperature.
- Prepare Portafilter: Insert the desired sieve insert (1-cup or 2-cup) into the portafilter. Fill with finely ground espresso coffee. Use the coffee spoon to measure and the tamper to press the coffee firmly and evenly. Wipe any excess grounds from the rim.
- Attach Portafilter: Align the portafilter with the group head on the machine. Insert it and turn it firmly to the right until it is securely locked in place.
- Place Cups: Place one or two espresso cups on the drip tray directly under the portafilter spouts.
- Brew Espresso: Press the coffee brewing button. The machine will start dispensing espresso. Monitor the pressure gauge for optimal brewing pressure.
- Stop Brewing: Press the coffee brewing button again to stop the flow once the desired amount of espresso is reached.
- Remove Portafilter: Carefully turn the portafilter to the left to unlock and remove it. Be cautious as it will be hot. Dispose of the used coffee grounds.
Frothing Milk (for Cappuccinos and Lattes):
- Prepare Milk: Fill a stainless steel frothing pitcher with cold milk (dairy or non-dairy) to about one-third full.
- Activate Steam Function: Turn the steam knob to the steam icon. Wait for the steam indicator light to illuminate steadily, indicating the machine has reached steaming temperature.
- Purge Steam Wand: Briefly open the steam knob to release any condensed water from the wand into an empty cup. Close the knob.
- Froth Milk: Immerse the tip of the steam wand just below the surface of the milk. Slowly open the steam knob. Angle the pitcher slightly to create a swirling motion. Move the pitcher up and down to incorporate air and heat the milk.
- Stop Steaming: Once the milk has reached the desired temperature and froth consistency (typically around 60-70°C or 140-160°F), close the steam knob.
- Clean Steam Wand: Immediately wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth to remove any milk residue. Briefly open the steam knob again to clear any milk from inside the wand.
- Combine: Pour the frothed milk into your freshly brewed espresso.
Hot Water Dispensing:
- Ensure the machine is on and preheated.
- Place a cup under the steam wand.
- Turn the steam knob to the hot water icon. Hot water will dispense from the steam wand.
- Turn the steam knob back to the closed position to stop the flow.
Maintenance and Cleaning
Regular cleaning and maintenance will ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your espresso machine.
Daily Cleaning:
- Portafilter and Sieve Inserts: After each use, remove the portafilter and discard coffee grounds. Rinse the portafilter and sieve inserts under running water. Use a small brush to remove any stubborn coffee residue.
- Drip Tray: Empty and rinse the drip tray and grid daily.
- Steam Wand: As mentioned in the operating instructions, wipe the steam wand immediately after each use with a damp cloth and briefly purge it to prevent milk residue buildup.
- Exterior: Wipe the exterior of the machine with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
Weekly Cleaning:
- Water Tank: Remove and thoroughly clean the water tank with warm soapy water. Rinse well to remove any soap residue.
- Group Head: Use a damp cloth to wipe the area around the group head where the portafilter attaches.
Descaling:
Descaling is crucial to remove mineral buildup and maintain machine performance. The frequency depends on water hardness and usage, but generally every 2-3 months or when you notice reduced flow or pressure.
Your machine includes a bottle of Durgol Special Descaler. Follow the instructions on the descaler bottle for proper use. General steps:
- Empty the water tank.
- Mix the descaling solution with water according to the descaler's instructions and pour it into the water tank.
- Place a large container under the coffee spout and another under the steam wand.
- Turn on the machine. Run about half of the descaling solution through the coffee spout (without coffee in the portafilter).
- Run the remaining half through the steam wand.
- Turn off the machine and let it sit for 15-20 minutes to allow the descaler to work.
- Empty and rinse the water tank thoroughly. Fill it with fresh, clean water.
- Run several full tanks of fresh water through both the coffee spout and the steam wand to rinse out any descaler residue.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your espresso machine, refer to the following table for common problems and solutions.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No water flow from coffee spout. | Water tank empty; machine not primed; clogged sieve/portafilter; scale buildup. | Fill water tank; prime the machine; clean portafilter/sieve; descale the machine. |
| No steam from steam wand. | Steam wand clogged; machine not at steaming temperature; steam knob not open. | Clean steam wand; wait for steam indicator light; open steam knob. |
| Espresso brews too slowly or not at all. | Coffee ground too fine; coffee tamped too hard; scale buildup. | Use coarser grind; tamp less firmly; descale the machine. |
| Espresso brews too quickly, weak coffee. | Coffee ground too coarse; not enough coffee; coffee not tamped firmly enough. | Use finer grind; increase coffee amount; tamp more firmly. |
| Machine leaks water. | Water tank not seated correctly; drip tray full; seal issue. | Reseat water tank; empty drip tray; contact customer support if leak persists. |
| Machine does not turn on. | Not plugged in; power outlet issue; ON/OFF switch not pressed. | Check power cord and outlet; press ON/OFF switch. |
