Setup

1. Attaching the Microphone to a Device

The SMALLRIG 3468 microphone can be mounted onto a camera's cold shoe or a tripod with a 1/4" thread using the included shock mount.

  1. Mounting the Shock Mount:
    • For cold shoe mounting: Slide the base of the shock mount into your camera's cold shoe slot until it is secure. Tighten the locking wheel if available.
    • For tripod mounting: The shock mount features a 1/4"-20 threaded hole on its bottom. Screw the shock mount onto a compatible tripod or rig.
  2. Attaching the Microphone: Insert the on-camera microphone into the red TPE damping structure of the shock mount. Ensure it is firmly seated to minimize vibrations.

2. Connecting to Recording Devices

The microphone is plug-and-play and does not require external power. Use the appropriate 3.5mm cable for your device.

  • For DSLR Cameras, Camcorders, and Audio Recorders: Use the included 3.5mm TRS to TRS cable (typically red). Connect one end to the microphone's 3.5mm output port and the other end to your device's microphone input.
  • For Smartphones: Use the included 3.5mm TRS to TRRS cable (typically black). Connect the TRS end to the microphone's 3.5mm output port and the TRRS end to your smartphone's 3.5mm jack. Note: For iPhones and some newer Android phones without a 3.5mm jack, a separate adapter (not included) may be required.

Operating Instructions

1. Understanding Microphone Modes

The SMALLRIG 3468 offers flexible recording options with its on-camera microphone and included lavalier microphone.

  • On-Camera Microphone ("M" Mode): Records a single audio track. Ideal for short videos and general use.
  • Lavalier Microphone: Records a single audio track. Suitable for single interviews or recordings where the subject needs to be close to the microphone.
  • On-Camera Microphone + Lavalier Microphone ("M" Mode): Records a single audio track, combining input from both microphones. Useful for vlogs where both ambient sound and a speaker's voice are desired.
  • On-Camera Microphone + Lavalier Microphone ("S" Mode): Records two separate audio tracks (left/right dual channel). This advanced mode is suitable for multi-person interviews or short videos requiring post-editing for individual audio control. To use this mode, connect the lavalier microphone to the 3.5mm TRS input port on the on-camera microphone.

2. Noise Reduction

The microphone system includes several features to ensure clear audio by reducing unwanted noise:

  • Super Cardioid Polar Pattern: Both the on-camera and lavalier microphones utilize a cardioid pickup pattern, which primarily captures sound from the front while effectively rejecting sounds from the sides and rear. This helps to eliminate background noise and echoes.
  • Shock Mount: The integrated TPE damping structure in the shock mount significantly reduces mechanical vibrations and handling noise that can be transmitted through the camera or rig.
  • Wind Protection:
    • Furry Windshield: Use the furry windshield for outdoor recordings to effectively reduce wind noise.
    • Foam Windscreens: The foam windscreens (for both on-camera and lavalier microphones) help to reduce plosives and light wind noise, suitable for indoor or less windy outdoor environments.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your SMALLRIG 3468 microphone.

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the microphone body. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents. For the foam windscreens, gently tap them to remove dust. The furry windshield can be carefully brushed.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the microphone and its accessories in the provided carrying bag to protect them from dust, moisture, and physical damage.
  • Handling: Avoid dropping the microphone or subjecting it to strong impacts. Do not expose it to extreme temperatures or high humidity.
  • Cable Care: Always grasp the plug, not the cable, when connecting or disconnecting. Avoid sharp bends or kinks in the cables.
