Introduction

Thank you for choosing the Snark ST-2 Multi-Instrument Chromatic Tuner and the Snark ST-8 Super Tight Clip-On Tuner. These advanced tuners are designed to provide accurate and fast tuning for a wide range of instruments, including acoustic guitars, electric guitars, basses, and other stringed instruments. Setup

1. Battery Installation

Both the Snark ST-2 and ST-8 tuners operate on a single CR2032 3V lithium battery (typically included). To install or replace the battery:

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the tuner unit.
  2. Use a small coin or fingernail to open the battery cover by twisting or prying gently.
  3. Insert the CR2032 battery with the positive (+) side facing upwards.
  4. Close the battery cover securely.

2. Attaching the Tuner to Your Instrument

The Snark tuners feature a strong, padded clip designed to attach securely to the headstock of most stringed instruments. The clip utilizes vibration sensing for accurate tuning.

  • Gently open the clip and attach it firmly to the headstock of your instrument. Ensure the rubber pads make good contact with the instrument's surface to maximize vibration transfer.
  • Position the display for optimal viewing. The display on both models can be rotated 360 degrees for easy readability from any angle, whether you are right-handed or left-handed.
  • Important Note: Some instrument finishes, particularly nitrocellulose lacquer, can be sensitive to prolonged contact with rubber or plastic. To prevent potential damage, avoid leaving the tuner clipped on your instrument for extended periods, especially on vintage or custom-finished instruments.

Operation

1. Powering On/Off

Press and hold the power button (usually located on the front or side of the tuner) for approximately 1-2 seconds to turn the tuner on or off. The display will illuminate when powered on.

2. Tuning Your Instrument

Once powered on and clipped to your instrument, pluck a single string. The tuner's display will show the note being played and indicate whether it is sharp, flat, or in tune.

  • Flat: If the note is flat, the indicator will be to the left of center (often red or yellow). Tighten the string until the indicator moves to the center.
  • Sharp: If the note is sharp, the indicator will be to the right of center (often red or yellow). Loosen the string until the indicator moves to the center.
  • In Tune: When the note is perfectly in tune, the indicator will be centered and typically turn green.

Both ST-2 and ST-8 models offer chromatic tuning, allowing you to tune any note. The ST-2 also features a microphone for tuning instruments where vibration sensing might be less effective, or for general room tuning.

3. Pitch Calibration (A4 Frequency)

The default calibration for both tuners is A4=440Hz. You can adjust this reference pitch if needed (e.g., for orchestral tuning or specific musical styles).

  • Press the "Pitch Cal" button (or similar button, refer to the back of your specific model for exact labeling).
  • Use the up/down arrow buttons to adjust the A4 frequency. The range is typically 415-466Hz.
  • The tuner will save your last calibration setting.

4. Tap Tempo Metronome

Both Snark ST-2 and ST-8 tuners include a built-in tap tempo metronome feature.

  • To activate the metronome, press the "Tempo" button (or similar, consult your tuner's back panel).
  • Tap the button repeatedly at your desired tempo. The tuner will calculate and display the BPM (Beats Per Minute).
  • The metronome provides a visual beat indication on the display.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning

To clean your Snark tuner, wipe it gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, solvents, or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the display or casing.

2. Battery Replacement

When the display dims or the tuner becomes unresponsive, it's time to replace the CR2032 battery. Refer to the "Battery Installation" section under Setup for instructions.

3. Storage

Store your tuner in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for an extended period (several months or more), it is recommended to remove the battery to prevent leakage.
