4. Setup
4.1 Battery Installation
The IDEAL 61-347 Multimeter requires three (3) 1.5V AAA batteries for operation. To install or replace batteries:
- Ensure the multimeter is turned OFF.
- Remove the screw securing the battery compartment cover on the back of the unit.
- Carefully remove the cover.
- Insert the three AAA batteries, observing the correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
- Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw.
4.2 Connecting Test Leads
Always connect the test leads to the correct input jacks for the desired measurement. Incorrect connection can lead to inaccurate readings or damage to the meter.
- Insert the black test lead into the "COM" (Common) jack.
- For voltage, resistance, continuity, capacitance, diode, and frequency measurements, insert the red test lead into the "VΩHz" jack.
- For current measurements up to 10A, insert the red test lead into the "A" jack.
- For microampere/milliampere current measurements, insert the red test lead into the "µA mA" jack.
5. Operating Instructions
This section outlines the basic operation for common measurement functions. Refer to the full PDF manual for detailed instructions on all functions.
5.1 Voltage Measurement (AC/DC)
- Turn the rotary dial to the "V~" (AC Voltage) or "V-" (DC Voltage) position.
- Connect the black test lead to the "COM" terminal and the red test lead to the "VΩHz" terminal.
- Carefully touch the test probes to the circuit points where voltage is to be measured.
- Read the voltage value on the display.

Figure 5.1: Multimeter displaying an AC voltage reading of 122.5V.
5.2 Current Measurement (AC/DC)
- Turn the rotary dial to the "A~" (AC Current) or "A-" (DC Current) position.
- Connect the black test lead to the "COM" terminal. For measurements up to 10A, connect the red test lead to the "A" terminal. For µA/mA measurements, connect to the "µA mA" terminal.
- Open the circuit and connect the multimeter in series with the load.
- Read the current value on the display.
5.3 Resistance, Continuity, Capacitance, Diode, and Frequency
Select the appropriate function on the rotary dial (Ω, Ω))), F, ⟷, Hz%). Connect the test leads to the "COM" and "VΩHz" terminals. Follow standard measurement procedures for each function.
5.4 Temperature Measurement
The multimeter measures temperature in Fahrenheit (°F) or Celsius (°C) using the included K-Type thermocouple.
- Turn the rotary dial to the "°F °C" position.
- Insert the K-Type thermocouple into the "COM" and "VΩHz" jacks, observing polarity.
- Place the thermocouple tip at the point where temperature is to be measured.
- Read the temperature on the display.
5.5 Non-Contact Voltage (NCV) Detection
For quick and safe detection of AC voltage without direct contact:
- Turn the rotary dial to the "NCV" position.
- Move the top center of the meter (where the NCV sensor is located) close to the conductor or outlet.
- The meter will emit audible tones and illuminate the red LED when voltage is detected.
5.6 Advanced Functions (HOLD, MIN/MAX, RELATIVE, RANGE, AUTO POWER OFF)
- HOLD: Freezes the current reading on the display.
- MIN/MAX: Records the minimum and maximum values measured during a session.
- RELATIVE: Measures the difference between a stored reference value and the current reading.
- RANGE: Allows manual selection of measurement range instead of auto-ranging.
- AUTO POWER OFF (APO): The meter automatically turns off after a period of inactivity to conserve battery life. This feature is selectable.
