4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Connecting Cables

  1. Separate the master unit and the remote unit.
  2. Connect one end of the network cable (RJ45 or RJ11) to the corresponding port on the master unit.
  3. Connect the other end of the network cable to the corresponding port on the remote unit.
  4. For testing installed cables, the remote unit can be left at the distant end of the cable run.

4.2 Performing a Cable Test

  1. Ensure the battery is installed and cables are connected as described in Section 4.1.
  2. Turn on the power switch. The switch has three positions:
    • OFF: Power off.
    • ON: Normal test speed.
    • S: Slow test speed.
  3. Observe the LED indicators on both the master and remote units. The LEDs will light up sequentially from 1 to 8, then G (Ground).
  4. Interpret the results based on the LED patterns:
    • Correct Connection: LEDs on both units light up in the same sequence (1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-G).
    • Open Circuit: If a specific LED on the remote unit does not light up while the corresponding LED on the master unit does, it indicates an open circuit (broken wire).
    • Short Circuit: If two or more LEDs light up simultaneously on the remote unit, or if the remote unit's LEDs do not light up at all for a specific wire, it indicates a short circuit.
    • Miswire/Crossed Pair: If the LEDs light up in a different sequence on the remote unit compared to the master unit, it indicates a miswire or crossed pair.

Example LED Sequence:

  • Master Tester: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-G
  • Remote Tester (RJ45): 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-G
  • Remote Tester (RJ11): 1-2-3-4 (only 4 wires are typically used in RJ11)

5. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the device in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for a long period, remove the battery.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace the 9V battery when the LED indicators become dim or the device fails to power on.

6. Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Device does not power on. Low or dead battery; incorrect battery installation. Replace the 9V battery; ensure correct polarity.
LEDs do not light up on remote unit. Cable is completely open or shorted; remote unit not connected properly. Check cable for damage; ensure secure connection to remote unit.
Inconsistent LED patterns. Miswire, open circuit, or short circuit in the cable. Refer to Section 4.2 for LED pattern interpretation to identify the specific fault.
Tester operates slowly even on 'ON' setting. Low battery. Replace the 9V battery.
