Operating Instructions

Manual Focus Operation

This is a manual focus lens. To achieve sharp focus:

  1. Set your camera to manual focus (MF) mode.
  2. Look through the viewfinder or use the camera's LCD screen.
  3. Rotate the focus ring on the lens until your subject appears sharp. Many cameras offer focus peaking or magnification aids in manual focus mode, which can be very helpful.
  4. For macro photography, precise focusing is critical due to the shallow depth of field. Consider using a tripod for stability.

Aperture Control

The lens features a manual aperture ring. Rotate the aperture ring to select your desired f-stop (from F2.8 to F16). The aperture ring has distinct clicks at half-stop intervals for precise control.

  • A wider aperture (smaller f-number like F2.8) creates a shallower depth of field, ideal for isolating subjects and achieving creamy bokeh.
  • A narrower aperture (larger f-number like F16) increases the depth of field, useful for landscapes or when more of the scene needs to be in focus.

Macro Photography

The 1:1 magnification ratio allows for capturing intricate details of small subjects. The minimum focusing distance is 0.17 meters (6.7 inches). When shooting at close distances, the front inner barrel of the lens can be disassembled to facilitate certain setups, particularly for insect photography.

General Photography

Beyond macro, this lens is also suitable for other photography types:

  • Portrait Photography: The 40mm focal length (equivalent to 60mm on APS-C) and F2.8 aperture are well-suited for portraits, providing a natural perspective and pleasing background blur.
  • Still Life Photography: Its macro capabilities make it excellent for capturing details in still life compositions.
