MXR M279

MXR Deep Phase Effects Pedal (M279) User Manual

Model: M279

1. Introduction

The MXR Deep Phase Effects Pedal (M279) is designed to deliver expressive vintage phaser tones. This pedal features a clear sound with a pronounced swoosh, scooped midrange, and a dynamic, voice-like response. It is suitable for both guitar and bass, adapting to various playing intensities. The Deep Phase Pedal is engineered to maintain consistent volume levels when engaged, addressing common issues found in older phaser circuits. Its compact MXR mini housing makes it a convenient addition to any pedalboard.

2. Setup

2.1 Power Connection

The MXR Deep Phase Pedal requires a 9-volt DC power supply with a 2.1mm barrel jack connector. Ensure the power supply is regulated and provides at least 9 milliamps of current. Connect the power supply to the 9V DC input jack on the pedal.

2.2 Audio Connections

  1. Connect your instrument (guitar or bass) to the INPUT jack on the right side of the pedal using a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable.
  2. Connect the OUTPUT jack on the left side of the pedal to your amplifier or the next pedal in your signal chain using another standard 1/4-inch instrument cable.

3. Operation

The Deep Phase Pedal features two control knobs and one switch for shaping your phaser effect.

3.1 Controls

  • SPEED Knob: This knob adjusts the rate of the phaser effect. Turning it clockwise increases the speed of the phase sweep, resulting in a faster, more rapid modulation. Turning it counter-clockwise slows down the sweep for a more gradual, flowing effect.
  • FDBK Knob: The Feedback (FDBK) knob controls the intensity and sharpness of the phase peaks. Increasing the FDBK setting (clockwise) will make the phaser effect more pronounced and resonant, creating a deeper, more swirling sound. Lower settings (counter-clockwise) will result in a subtler, smoother phase.
  • MODE II Switch: This toggle switch alters the number of phase stages. In its default position (down), the pedal operates with 4 phase shifter stages, producing a smooth and classic phaser sound. Flipping the switch to the 'Mode II' position (up) engages 8 phase stages, doubling the number of peaks and creating a more animated, complex, and textured effect.

3.2 Footswitch

The footswitch engages or bypasses the effect. Press the footswitch once to activate the Deep Phase effect. Press it again to bypass the effect, returning to your dry signal.

4. Key Features

  • Vintage-inspired phaser tones with modern reliability.
  • Dynamic response to playing attack.
  • Adjustable phaser intensity via the FDBK knob.
  • Switchable 4-stage (smooth) or 8-stage (textured) phasing modes.
  • Compact and durable MXR mini housing.
  • Designed to prevent volume drop when engaged.
  • Suitable for both guitar and bass instruments.

5. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the pedal's exterior. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the pedal in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures when not in use.
  • Power: Always use a compatible 9V DC power supply. Disconnect power when the pedal is not in use for extended periods.
  • Connections: Periodically check all cable connections for wear and tear. Ensure jacks are free of dust and debris.

6. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No sound when pedal is engaged.Incorrect power supply, faulty cables, incorrect connection, pedal not engaged.Verify power supply (9V DC, 2.1mm barrel, 9mA minimum). Check all instrument cables. Ensure input/output connections are correct. Press footswitch to engage.
Weak or distorted sound.Low battery (if applicable, though this pedal is DC powered), incorrect FDBK setting, signal clipping.Ensure power supply is stable. Adjust FDBK knob. Check input signal level to prevent clipping.
Phaser effect is too subtle or too intense.SPEED or FDBK knobs set too low/high, Mode II switch setting.Adjust SPEED and FDBK knobs to desired level. Experiment with the Mode II switch for 4-stage (smoother) or 8-stage (more animated) phasing.
Pedal intermittently loses power.Loose power connection, faulty power supply, damaged power jack.Ensure power cable is securely connected. Try a different, known-good 9V DC power supply. If problem persists, contact support.
