  • Use caution when working at heights. Ensure ladders or scaffolding are stable and properly secured.
  • Keep children and pets away from the work area.
  • Do not use these shutters for structural support. They are designed for decorative purposes only.
  • If using power tools, follow the manufacturer's safety guidelines.

4. Tools Required

The following tools are recommended for installation:

  • Measuring Tape
  • Pencil
  • Level
  • Drill with appropriate drill bits
  • Screwdriver (manual or power)
  • Mounting hardware (screws, anchors, or shutter dogs, depending on desired installation method)
  • Caulk gun and exterior-grade sealant (optional, for sealing edges)
  • Saw (for trimming if necessary, PVC is easily cut with standard woodworking tools)

5. Installation Instructions

These shutters are designed for fixed installation. If you intend to install them with functional hardware (e.g., hinges, shutter dogs), ensure the hardware is compatible with PVC and the installation method provides adequate support.

5.1. Preparation

  1. Inspect Shutters: Before installation, carefully inspect each shutter for any manufacturing defects or shipping damage.
  2. Measure Window Opening: Measure the height and width of your window opening to ensure the shutters fit correctly. These shutters are 21.5 inches wide and 65 inches high each.
  3. Determine Placement: Position the shutters on either side of the window opening. Ensure they are level and plumb.
  4. Mark Mounting Points: Mark the desired mounting points on the wall through the shutter. Consider the type of mounting hardware you will use.

5.2. Mounting

  1. Drill Pilot Holes: Drill pilot holes at the marked locations on the wall and through the shutter, if necessary, according to your hardware manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Attach Hardware: Secure the mounting hardware to the wall. If using screws directly into the siding, ensure they are long enough to penetrate into structural framing. For masonry, use appropriate anchors.
  3. Mount Shutters: Carefully align the shutters with the installed hardware and secure them in place. Ensure they are firmly attached and do not wobble.
  4. Seal Edges (Optional): For a finished look and added weather protection, apply an exterior-grade sealant around the edges where the shutter meets the wall.

6. Maintenance

Ekena Millwork PVC shutters are designed for low maintenance and long-lasting performance. Follow these guidelines to keep your shutters looking their best:

  • Cleaning: Clean the shutters periodically with mild soap and water. Use a soft cloth or sponge to wipe away dirt and debris. Avoid abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the PVC surface.
  • Painting: These shutters come primed and are ready for painting. Use 100% acrylic latex exterior paint. For dark colors, it is crucial to use exterior 100% acrylic latex paint with a Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of 55 or higher to prevent heat absorption and potential warping. Consult the "True Fit PVC Shutters | Dark Color Notice" image for detailed painting guidelines.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter any issues with your Ekena Millwork PVC shutters, refer to the following common troubleshooting tips:

  • Warping/Deformation: If shutters show signs of warping, especially after painting with a dark color, verify that the paint used adheres to the LRV guidelines (Light Reflectance Value of 55 or higher for dark colors). Excessive heat absorption from dark colors can cause deformation.
  • Loose Shutters: If shutters become loose, check the mounting hardware. Tighten screws or replace anchors as needed. Ensure the hardware is appropriate for your wall material.
  • Discoloration: While PVC is highly resistant to discoloration, prolonged exposure to certain chemicals or extreme environmental conditions might affect its appearance. Clean with mild soap and water. If discoloration persists, repainting may be an option, adhering to paint guidelines.
