Operating Instructions
Printing Modes: Direct Thermal vs. Thermal Transfer
The ZD621 supports two primary printing technologies:
- Direct Thermal: This method does not require a ribbon. It uses heat-sensitive media that darkens when exposed to the printhead. It is economical and suitable for short-term labeling needs, as labels can fade over time.
- Thermal Transfer: This method requires a thermal ribbon. The printhead heats the ribbon, transferring ink onto the label material. This produces highly durable, long-lasting images resistant to fading and environmental factors, ideal for high-performance labeling.

- Select the Zebra ZD621 printer from your application's print dialog.
- Configure print settings such as label size, print density, and print speed as required for your specific media and application.
- Initiate the print job from your software. The printer will automatically feed and print labels.
Maintenance
Cleaning the Printhead
Regular cleaning of the printhead ensures optimal print quality and extends the life of the printer. Clean the printhead after every ribbon or media roll change, or if print quality degrades.
- Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord.
- Open the top cover.
- Using a printhead cleaning pen or a lint-free cloth moistened with isopropyl alcohol (99% pure), gently wipe across the dark line of the printhead from center to edge.
- Allow the printhead to dry completely before closing the cover and reconnecting power.
Replacing Media and Ribbon
Follow the loading media and ribbon instructions in the Setup section when replacing depleted supplies.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No Power | Power cord not connected; power outlet not active. | Ensure power cord is securely connected to printer and a live outlet. Check power switch. |
| Poor Print Quality | Dirty printhead; incorrect media/ribbon; print density setting too low. | Clean the printhead. Verify correct media and ribbon type for your application. Adjust print density in printer settings. |
| Labels Not Feeding Correctly | Media loaded incorrectly; media sensor obstructed or miscalibrated. | Reload media correctly. Clean media sensors. Perform a media calibration from the printer's utility software. |
| Printer Not Responding | Incorrect driver installation; connectivity issue (USB/Ethernet cable loose). | Reinstall printer drivers. Check USB or Ethernet cable connections. Restart printer and computer. |
