1. Introduction

Thank you for choosing the Kanto SUB8VMW Sealed Powered Subwoofer. This manual provides essential information for the safe and optimal use of your subwoofer. Please read these instructions thoroughly before installation and operation, and retain them for future reference.

2. Safety Instructions

To reduce the risk of electric shock, fire, or injury, always follow these basic safety precautions:

  • Power Source: Connect the subwoofer only to an AC power outlet that matches the voltage specified on the unit. Ensure the power cord is not pinched or walked on.
  • Ventilation: Do not block any ventilation openings. Allow adequate space around the subwoofer for proper airflow to prevent overheating.
  • Water and Moisture: Do not expose the subwoofer to rain, moisture, dripping, or splashing. Do not place objects filled with liquids, such as vases, on the unit.
  • Heat Sources: Keep the subwoofer away from heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus (including amplifiers) that produce heat.
  • Cleaning: Unplug the subwoofer from the wall outlet before cleaning. Use only a dry cloth for cleaning.
  • Servicing: Do not attempt to service this product yourself. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. Opening or removing covers may expose you to dangerous voltage or other hazards.
  • Placement: Place the subwoofer on a stable, level surface to prevent it from falling. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight or near strong magnetic fields.

5. Setup

5.1 Placement

The placement of your subwoofer can significantly impact its performance. Consider the following:

  • Room Acoustics: Experiment with different locations in your room. Corner placement often accentuates bass, while placement along a wall can provide a more balanced response.
  • Listening Position: The "subwoofer crawl" method can help: place the subwoofer at your primary listening position, play bass-heavy music, and then crawl around the room to find where the bass sounds best. That spot is often ideal for the subwoofer.
  • Proximity to Main Speakers: While low frequencies are less directional, placing the subwoofer relatively close to your main speakers can improve sonic integration.
  • Compact Design: The SUB8VMW's compact size (approximately 11" in each direction) allows for flexible placement, including under desks or in smaller living spaces.

5.2 Connections

Before making any connections, ensure the subwoofer and all connected audio equipment are powered off and unplugged from the wall outlet.

  1. Connect to Receiver/Amplifier: Use an RCA cable to connect the "Sub Out" or "LFE Out" port on your receiver or amplifier to the "Sub In" (L/R) input on the Kanto SUB8VMW. If your receiver has a single LFE output, you can connect it to either the L or R input on the subwoofer, or use a Y-adapter for potentially stronger signal.
  2. Power Connection: Once audio connections are secure, connect the supplied power cord to the AC Power Inlet on the subwoofer and then to a suitable wall outlet.

6. Operating Instructions

After setup, power on your subwoofer and connected audio equipment. Adjust the settings for optimal performance.

  • Power On: Flip the main Power Switch on the rear panel to the "ON" position.
  • Standby Power:
    • ON: Subwoofer remains continuously on.
    • AUTO: Subwoofer automatically turns on when an audio signal is detected and enters standby mode after a period of inactivity.
    • OFF: Subwoofer remains off.
  • Volume Level Control: Start with the volume control at a low setting. Play some music or movie content and gradually increase the subwoofer volume until it blends seamlessly with your main speakers. The subwoofer should enhance the bass without overpowering the overall sound.
  • Crossover Frequency: This control determines the highest frequency the subwoofer will reproduce.
    • If your main speakers are small (e.g., bookshelf speakers), set the crossover higher (e.g., 80Hz - 100Hz) to allow the subwoofer to handle more of the mid-bass.
    • If your main speakers are larger (e.g., floor-standing speakers), set the crossover lower (e.g., 40Hz - 60Hz) as they can reproduce more low frequencies themselves.
    • Experiment to find the best blend.
  • Phase Switch (0°/180°): This switch helps ensure the subwoofer's sound waves are in sync with your main speakers.
    • Play music with a strong, consistent bass line.
    • Toggle the phase switch between 0° and 180°.
    • Choose the setting that produces the loudest and most impactful bass at your listening position.

7. Maintenance

Proper care will ensure the longevity and performance of your Kanto SUB8VMW subwoofer.

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the exterior surfaces. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents as they may damage the finish.
  • Dust: Regularly dust the grille and cabinet to prevent dust buildup, which can affect performance and aesthetics.
  • Ventilation: Ensure that the ventilation openings are clear of obstructions.
  • Storage: If storing the subwoofer for an extended period, unplug it from the power outlet and store it in a cool, dry place, protected from dust and extreme temperatures.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your subwoofer, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No sound from subwoofer
  • Subwoofer not powered on.
  • Volume too low.
  • Incorrect audio connection.
  • Source device not sending signal.
  • Ensure main power switch is ON and Standby Power is ON or AUTO.
  • Increase subwoofer volume.
  • Check RCA cable connections at both the subwoofer and receiver/amplifier.
  • Verify your receiver/amplifier's settings for subwoofer output.
Distorted or boomy bass
  • Volume too high.
  • Crossover frequency set too high.
  • Incorrect phase setting.
  • Poor room acoustics/placement.
  • Reduce subwoofer volume.
  • Lower the crossover frequency.
  • Toggle the phase switch (0°/180°) to find the clearer setting.
  • Experiment with subwoofer placement.
Subwoofer not entering auto-standby
  • Constant low-level signal.
  • Sensitivity issue.
  • Ensure the Standby Power switch is set to AUTO.
  • Increase the volume on the subwoofer slightly, and decrease the subwoofer output level from your receiver/amplifier if possible. This can help the auto-standby feature detect a lack of signal more effectively.
