Extreme Networks 5420F-48P-4XE Switch User Manual

Model: 5420F-48P-4XE

Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your Extreme Networks 5420F-48P-4XE Switch. This advanced universal edge switch is designed to deliver high-density Power over Ethernet (PoE) with advanced policy-based automation, supporting 1G access ports and 10/25G uplinks for secure and scalable enterprise networks.

Setup and Installation

Unpacking and Inspection

Carefully unpack the switch and inspect it for any signs of damage during transit. Ensure all components listed in the packing slip are present. The switch dimensions are approximately 4.53 x 2.69 x 1.59 inches and it weighs 5.5 pounds.

Physical Placement

Place the switch in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and excessive moisture. Ensure adequate space around the unit for proper airflow.

Connecting Power

Connect the provided power cord to the power inlet on the rear panel of the switch and then to a grounded AC power outlet. The switch will begin its power-on self-test (POST) sequence.

Network Connections

Connect your network devices (computers, servers, access points, IP phones, etc.) to the 1G Ethernet ports on the front panel. Use the 10/25G uplink ports for connecting to your core network or other high-bandwidth devices.

  • Fabric Services: Enables automated segmentation for secure and scalable network operations.
  • Advanced Policy and QoS: Allows for granular control over network traffic, prioritizing critical applications and ensuring quality of service.
  • MACsec Encryption: Offers link-layer encryption to secure data transmission between connected devices.
  • Role-Based Access Controls: Enhances security by assigning network access based on user roles.

Management

The switch can be managed via ExtremeCloud IQ and Site Engine, providing unified wired/wireless visibility and simplifying troubleshooting across your network infrastructure. Refer to the ExtremeCloud IQ documentation for detailed management procedures.

Maintenance

General Care

Keep the switch clean and free from dust. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning the exterior. Ensure that ventilation openings are not obstructed to prevent overheating. Operate the switch within its specified environmental conditions.

Firmware Updates

Regularly check for and apply firmware updates to ensure optimal performance, security, and access to new features. Firmware updates are typically managed through ExtremeCloud IQ or directly via the switch's command-line interface (CLI).

Troubleshooting

This section provides basic troubleshooting steps for common issues. For more complex problems, consult the Extreme Networks support documentation or contact technical support.

  • No Power: Ensure the power cord is securely connected to both the switch and a working power outlet. Check the power indicator LED on the switch.
  • No Network Connectivity: Verify that Ethernet cables are properly connected to the correct ports. Check the link/activity LEDs on the ports. Ensure IP configuration is correct.
  • PoE Device Not Powering On: Confirm the connected device is PoE-compatible. Check the PoE status indicators on the switch ports. Ensure the switch's PoE budget is not exceeded.
  • Slow Network Performance: Check for network congestion, cable quality, and duplex mismatches. Review switch logs for error messages.
