4. Setup and Installation

4.1 Mounting the Radio

The M510 is designed for fixed mounting. Use the provided mounting bracket kit to secure the radio in a suitable location on your vessel. Ensure the location allows for proper ventilation and easy access to controls and connections. The compact depth of the M510 allows for installation in more confined spaces compared to previous models.

4.2 Power Connection

Connect the supplied DC power cable to a 13.8V DC power source (operating range 11.7V to 15.9V DC). Observe correct polarity: red wire to positive (+), black wire to negative (-). Improper connection can damage the unit.

4.3 Antenna Connection

Connect a suitable VHF marine antenna to the antenna connector on the rear of the M510. Ensure the connection is secure and waterproof.

4.4 Microphone Connection

The HM-250RB speaker microphone can be connected to either the front or back microphone connection ports on the M510. Choose the port that offers the most convenient access for your setup.

5.1 Power On/Off

Press and hold the CH/ENT PWR button to power the unit on or off.

5.2 Volume and Squelch Adjustment

5.3 Channel Selection

Use the CH up/down buttons or the rotary selector to change channels. The M510 supports USA, International (INT), Canadian (CAN), and Weather (WX) channels, as well as 4-digit channels.

5.4 Transmitting

To transmit, press and hold the Push-To-Talk (PTT) button on the microphone. Speak clearly into the microphone. Release the PTT button to receive.

5.5 Display and Menu Navigation

The 3.5-inch TFT LCD screen provides a clear user interface. Use the MENU button to access various settings and functions. Navigate using the directional buttons and confirm selections with ENT.

The display features animated functions and a night mode for optimal viewing in low-light conditions.

5.6 Digital Selective Calling (DSC)

The M510 is a Class D DSC radio. For DSC functions, ensure your MMSI (Maritime Mobile Service Identity) is programmed into the radio. Refer to the specific DSC section of the full manual for detailed instructions on making distress calls, individual calls, and other DSC operations.

5.7 Smart Device Connectivity (RS-M500 App)

The RS-M500 app allows up to three iOS® or Android™ smart devices to function as a wireless command speaker/microphone. This enables features such as push-to-talk, channel scrolling/scanning, and intercom functionality from a remote location. One COMMANDMIC™ can also be connected simultaneously with three smart devices.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning

Wipe the radio and microphone with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as they may damage the surfaces. The M510 is water resistant (IP68 rating), but avoid submerging it unnecessarily.

6.2 AquaQuake™ Function

The HM-250RB microphone features AquaQuake™. This function vibrates the speaker diaphragm to shed water, ensuring clear audio even after exposure to moisture. Activate it periodically or after the microphone has been wet.

6.3 Firmware Updates

Periodically check the Icom website for firmware updates to ensure your M510 has the latest features and performance enhancements.
