Setup

Power Requirements

The Empress Bass Compressor requires a 9V DC power supply with a minimum current output of 300mA. The power input jack is a standard 2.1mm barrel connector with center-negative polarity. Ensure your power supply meets these specifications to prevent damage to the pedal.

Connections

  1. Connect your bass guitar to the INPUT jack on the rear of the pedal.
  2. Connect the OUTPUT jack on the rear of the pedal to your amplifier or the next pedal in your signal chain.
  3. (Optional) For sidechain compression, connect an external signal source to the SIDECHAIN 3.5mm TRS jack. The tip is for send, and the ring is for return.
  4. Connect the 9V DC power supply to the 9V DC power input jack.

Operating the Pedal

Controls and Functions

  • INPUT: Adjusts the input gain of the compressor. Use in conjunction with the Input Meter to ensure optimal signal level.
  • OUTPUT: Controls the overall output volume of the pedal.
  • ATTACK: Determines how quickly the compressor reacts to signals exceeding the threshold. A faster attack (lower setting) will compress transients more aggressively.
  • RELEASE: Sets how long it takes for the compressor to return to its uncompressed state after the signal drops below the threshold. A slower release (higher setting) can create a smoother, more sustained sound.
  • MIX: Blends the compressed signal with the dry (uncompressed) signal. This allows for parallel compression, preserving the natural dynamics while adding sustain and density.
  • SC HP (Sidechain High Pass): A variable high-pass filter for the sidechain signal. This allows you to prevent lower frequencies (e.g., bass notes) from triggering the compressor, resulting in a more natural and less "pumping" compression effect on bass instruments. The filter frequency ranges from 20Hz to 400Hz.
  • RATIO Switch: Selects the compression ratio: 2:1 (mild), 4:1 (medium), or 10:1 (heavy).
  • TONE + COLOUR Switch: A two-position circuit that adds gentle tone sculpting and harmonic distortion. One position offers a mid-range cut, while the other provides an upper mid-range boost, adding character to your bass tone.
  • GAIN REDUCTION Meter: Displays the amount of gain reduction (compression) being applied in decibels (dB).
  • INPUT Meter: Displays the input signal level, helping you set the INPUT knob for optimal performance.

Basic Operation

  1. Start with all knobs at noon and the RATIO switch at 4:1.
  2. Play your instrument and adjust the INPUT knob until the INPUT meter shows a healthy signal, ideally peaking around -2dB to 0dB.
  3. Adjust the ATTACK and RELEASE knobs to shape the compression response. Experiment to find a setting that feels natural and responsive to your playing style.
  4. Use the MIX knob to blend in the desired amount of compressed signal. For subtle sustain, use a lower mix. For a more pronounced compressed sound, increase the mix.
  5. Experiment with the RATIO switch to achieve different levels of compression intensity.
  6. Engage the TONE + COLOUR switch to explore additional tonal characteristics.
  7. Adjust the OUTPUT knob to match the volume of your bypassed signal.

Maintenance

The Empress Bass Compressor is a robust pedal designed for durability. To ensure its longevity and optimal performance:

  • Keep the pedal clean by wiping it with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Protect the pedal from extreme temperatures, humidity, and direct sunlight.
  • Avoid dropping the pedal or subjecting it to strong impacts.
  • Ensure all cables are securely connected before use.
  • Always use a power supply that matches the specified voltage and current requirements.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No sound when pedal is engaged.Incorrect power supply, faulty cables, incorrect connections.Verify power supply (9V DC, 300mA, center-negative). Check all cables for damage and ensure they are fully inserted into the correct jacks (Input/Output).
Pedal not compressing or meters not moving.Input signal too low, incorrect settings.Increase the INPUT knob. Ensure the RATIO switch is set to a compression ratio (2:1, 4:1, or 10:1).
Sound is "pumping" or unnatural.Attack/Release settings too fast, or sidechain filter not optimized.Adjust ATTACK and RELEASE knobs to slower settings. Experiment with the SC HP knob to filter out low frequencies from the sidechain, especially for bass.
Pedal did not come with a power cord. Many effects pedals are sold without included power supplies.A compatible 9V DC, 300mA (minimum), center-negative power supply must be purchased separately.
Unwanted noise or hum.Ground loop, faulty power supply, interference.Ensure all equipment is properly grounded. Try a different power outlet or a dedicated pedal power supply. Check for interference from other electronic devices.
