5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Making Espresso
- Prepare Portafilter: Insert the desired filter basket (single or double) into the portafilter. Add finely ground espresso coffee to the basket. For a single shot, use approximately 7g; for a double, use 14g.
- Tamp Coffee: Lightly tamp the coffee grounds evenly. Wipe any excess grounds from the rim of the portafilter.
- Insert Portafilter: Align the portafilter with the group head on the machine, insert it, and twist firmly to the right until it is securely locked.
- Place Cup: Place one or two pre-warmed espresso cups on the drip tray directly under the portafilter spouts.
- Power On & Heat: Ensure the water tank is filled. Plug in the machine and turn the control knob to 'OFF'. Wait for the 'Ready' indicator light to illuminate, indicating the machine has reached brewing temperature.
- Brew Espresso: Turn the control knob to the 'Espresso' position. Espresso will begin to flow into your cup(s).
- Stop Brewing: Once the desired amount of espresso is brewed (typically 25-30ml for a single shot, 50-60ml for a double), turn the control knob back to 'OFF'.
- Remove Portafilter: Carefully twist the portafilter to the left to unlock and remove it. Dispose of the used coffee grounds.
5.2 Frothing Milk for Cappuccino/Latte
After brewing your espresso, you can froth milk:
- Prepare Milk: Fill a stainless steel frothing pitcher with cold milk (dairy or non-dairy) to just below the spout.
- Heat for Steam: Turn the control knob to the 'Steam' position. Wait for the 'Ready' indicator light to illuminate, indicating the machine has reached steaming temperature.
- Purge Steam Wand: Briefly open the steam valve to release any condensed water from the wand into an empty cup. Close the valve.
- Froth Milk: Immerse the tip of the steam wand just below the surface of the milk. Open the steam valve. Hold the pitcher at an angle, moving it slightly up and down to create foam. For latte, aim for less foam and more heated milk. For cappuccino, aim for a thicker foam layer.
- Stop Steaming: Once the milk reaches the desired temperature and texture (around 60-70°C or 140-160°F), close the steam valve and immediately turn the control knob to 'OFF'.
- Clean Steam Wand: Immediately wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth to prevent milk residue from drying. Briefly purge the wand again to clear any internal milk.
- Combine: Pour the frothed milk into your espresso to create your desired beverage.
6. Cleaning and Maintenance
6.1 Daily Cleaning
- Portafilter and Filter Baskets: After each use, remove the portafilter, discard grounds, and rinse the portafilter and filter basket under hot water.
- Steam Wand: Always wipe the steam wand immediately after frothing milk. Briefly purge steam to clear internal residue.
- Drip Tray: Empty and rinse the drip tray regularly. It has a red indicator that floats up when full.
- Water Tank: Empty and rinse the water tank daily, refilling with fresh water.
- Exterior: Wipe the exterior of the machine with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scourers.
6.2 Descaling
Mineral deposits from water can build up in the machine over time, affecting performance and taste. Descale your machine every 2-3 months, or more frequently if you have hard water.
- Prepare Descaling Solution: Mix a commercial descaling solution with water according to the product instructions. Pour the solution into the water tank.
- Run Descaling Cycle (Espresso): Place a large container under the group head. Turn the control knob to 'Espresso' and let half of the solution run through. Turn to 'OFF'.
- Run Descaling Cycle (Steam): Place a container under the steam wand. Turn the control knob to 'Steam' and let the remaining solution run through the steam wand. Turn to 'OFF'.
- Rinse: Empty the water tank and rinse thoroughly. Fill with fresh water.
- Flush with Fresh Water: Repeat steps 2 and 3 using only fresh water to rinse the machine completely. Repeat this rinsing process at least twice to ensure no descaling solution remains.
