Model: Kyoritsu 3132A | Brand: Graigar

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the Kyoritsu 3132A Analogue Insulation Continuity Tester. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the instrument to ensure proper functionality and safety.

2. Safety Information

Always adhere to the following safety precautions to prevent electric shock, injury, or damage to the instrument:

  • Read and understand all instructions before use.
  • Do not use the tester if it appears damaged or is operating abnormally.
  • Ensure the circuit under test is de-energized and locked out before connecting test leads, unless performing a live circuit test with appropriate precautions.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as insulated gloves and safety glasses.
  • Observe the 'LIVE CIRCUIT WARNING' neon lamp. Do not operate the tester if this lamp is lit, indicating a live circuit.
  • Avoid touching the test leads or the circuit under test during operation.
  • Do not exceed the maximum input ratings specified for the instrument.
  • Replace batteries promptly when the 'BATT. GOOD' indicator shows low power.
  • The instrument is designed for CAT III 600V applications.

Key Features:

  • Analogue Display: Clear, easy-to-read meter for insulation and continuity measurements.
  • Function Selector: Rotary switch to select Insulation Test voltages (250V, 500V, 1000V), Continuity ranges (3Ω, 500Ω), and Battery Check.
  • Press to Test Button: Initiates the measurement. Includes a lock function for continuous testing.
  • OHMS ZERO ADJ: Knob for adjusting the meter to zero for accurate resistance measurements.
  • Movement Zero: Adjustment for the meter needle's resting position.
  • Live Circuit Warning: Buzzer and neon lamp alert the user to the presence of voltage.
  • Automatic Discharge: Discharges capacitance in the circuit after insulation testing.

4. Setup

4.1. Battery Installation

The Kyoritsu 3132A is battery-powered. To install or replace batteries:

  1. Ensure the tester is turned off and disconnect all test leads.
  2. Locate and open the battery compartment cover, typically on the rear of the unit.
  3. Insert the required batteries, observing correct polarity.
  4. Securely close the battery compartment cover.

4.2. Connecting Test Leads

Use the provided test leads for measurements.

  1. Insert the red test lead into the 'LINE' terminal.
  2. Insert the black test lead into the 'EARTH' terminal.
  3. Ensure connections are firm before proceeding with any tests.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1. Powering On and Battery Check

  1. Turn the function selector to 'BATT. CHECK'.
  2. Press and hold the 'PRESS TO TEST' button.
  3. Observe the analogue meter. The needle should point to the 'BATT. GOOD' section. If it falls below this, replace the batteries.

5.2. Adjusting Movement Zero

Before any measurement, ensure the meter needle rests at the zero mark when no test is being performed. If not, use the 'MOVEMENT ZERO' screw to adjust it.

5.3. Insulation Resistance Test

This test measures the resistance of insulation between two points, typically a conductor and earth, or between two conductors.

  1. Safety First: Ensure the circuit under test is de-energized and isolated. Confirm the 'LIVE CIRCUIT WARNING' neon lamp is off.
  2. Turn the function selector to the desired insulation test voltage: 250V/100MΩ, 500V/200MΩ, or 1000V/400MΩ. Choose a voltage appropriate for the system being tested.
  3. Connect the test leads to the points where insulation resistance is to be measured.
  4. Press and hold the 'PRESS TO TEST' button. For continuous testing, press and turn the button clockwise to lock it.
  5. Read the insulation resistance value from the appropriate scale on the analogue meter.
  6. Release the 'PRESS TO TEST' button (or unlock it). The instrument will automatically discharge any stored capacitance in the circuit.

5.4. Continuity Test

This test checks for a continuous electrical path with low resistance.

  1. Safety First: Ensure the circuit under test is de-energized and isolated.
  2. Turn the function selector to the desired continuity range: 3Ω or 500Ω.
  3. Before connecting to the circuit, short the test leads together. Use the 'OHMS ZERO ADJ' knob to set the meter needle to zero.
  4. Connect the test leads to the points where continuity is to be measured.
  5. Press and hold the 'PRESS TO TEST' button.
  6. Read the continuity resistance value from the appropriate scale on the analogue meter. A low resistance reading indicates continuity.
  7. Release the 'PRESS TO TEST' button.

6. Maintenance

6.1. Cleaning

Wipe the instrument with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure the instrument is dry before storage or use.

6.2. Battery Replacement

Refer to Section 4.1 for battery replacement instructions. Always use fresh batteries of the specified type.

6.3. Storage

Store the tester in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Kyoritsu 3132A, consider the following:

  • No Power/Display: Check battery condition (Section 5.1) and ensure they are correctly installed.
  • Inaccurate Readings: Perform 'OHMS ZERO ADJ' before continuity tests. Check 'MOVEMENT ZERO' adjustment. Ensure test leads are properly connected and not damaged.
  • Live Circuit Warning Active: Do not proceed with testing. De-energize the circuit immediately.
  • Tester Not Responding: Ensure the 'PRESS TO TEST' button is fully depressed or locked.

For persistent issues, contact customer support or a qualified service technician.
