Operating the Keyboard
1. QMK/VIA Programmability
The Keychron Q4 is fully compatible with QMK and VIA software, allowing you to program and remap each key, create macros, and customize lighting effects. To use VIA:
- Connect the Q4 to your device using the provided cable.
- Download and install the VIA software from the official Keychron website or the VIA website.
- Import the Q4 keymap JSON file into the VIA software. This file is typically available on the Keychron product page or support section.
- Use the drag-and-drop interface within VIA to remap keys or assign macro commands for macOS, Windows, or Linux operating systems.

2. RGB Backlighting
The Q4 features south-facing RGB LEDs, designed to enhance backlight visibility from the typist's perspective, especially with non-shine-through PBT keycaps. Lighting effects can be customized via the VIA software.

3. Volume Knob
The oversized aluminum volume knob provides a tactile method for controlling audio volume without needing to interact with your mouse or operating system settings.
Maintenance
1. Hot-Swappable Switches
The Keychron Q4 features hot-swappable sockets, allowing you to easily change mechanical switches without soldering. It supports almost all 3-pin and 5-pin MX style mechanical switches (e.g., Cherry, Gateron, Kailh, Panda).
- Use the provided switch puller to carefully remove the existing switch.
- Align the pins of the new switch with the holes on the PCB.
- Gently press the new switch into place until it clicks securely. Ensure pins are not bent.

2. Keycap Removal and Cleaning
The included keycap puller allows for easy removal of keycaps for cleaning or replacement. The PBT keycaps are designed for oil resistance and durability.
- Use the keycap puller to gently grip and lift keycaps off the switches.
- Clean keycaps with a mild soap solution and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly.
- To reattach, align the keycap stem with the switch stem and press down firmly.
Troubleshooting
- Keyboard not responding: Ensure the USB-C cable is securely connected to both the keyboard and the computer. Verify the OS switch is set correctly.
- Keys not registering: If individual keys are not working, carefully remove the keycap and switch using the provided tools. Re-insert the switch, ensuring the pins are straight and fully seated in the hot-swap socket.
- RGB lighting issues: Check VIA software for lighting settings. Ensure the keyboard firmware is up to date.
- Wobbly "big keys": The PCB-mounted screw-in stabilizers are designed to reduce wobbliness. If issues persist, ensure stabilizers are properly seated and lubricated.
