2. Product Overview
The GAIN EXPRESS SLM-267 is a compact and portable digital sound level meter featuring a backlit LCD display for clear readings. It is equipped with functions for maximum/minimum value measurement, data hold, and automatic power-off to conserve battery life. A windscreen is included to minimize wind noise during outdoor measurements.
2.1 Components and Display

- Electret Condenser Microphone: Captures sound. Use the included windscreen to reduce wind interference.
- LCD Display: Shows measurement values, battery level, mode indicators (HOLD, MIN, MAX, OVER), and units (dBA).
- Power/Backlight Button: Turns the device on/off and controls the display backlight.
- MIN/MAX Button: Toggles between current, minimum, and maximum sound level readings.
- HOLD Button: Freezes the current measurement on the display.
- Tripod Mount: A 1/4-inch screw hole for mounting on a tripod (tripod not included).
- Battery Cover: Located on the back for battery installation.

3. Setup
3.1 Battery Installation
- Locate the battery cover on the back of the device.
- Slide the battery cover downwards to open it.
- Insert three (3) AAA 1.5V batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
- Slide the battery cover back into place until it clicks securely.

3.2 Tripod Mounting (Optional)
The device includes a 1/4-inch screw hole on the back for mounting onto a standard tripod. This can be useful for stable, long-term measurements or when hands-free operation is desired. Ensure the tripod is stable before mounting the device.

4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Power On/Off
- To Power On: Press the Power/Backlight button once. The display will light up and begin showing real-time measurements.
- To Power Off: Long press the Power/Backlight button for approximately 2 seconds.
4.2 Backlight Control
- While the device is powered on, press the Power/Backlight button briefly to toggle the display backlight on or off.

4.3 Mode Selection (MIN/MAX)
- Press the MIN/MAX button to cycle through measurement modes: Current Value → Minimum Value (MIN) → Maximum Value (MAX).
- The corresponding indicator (MIN or MAX) will appear on the display.
4.4 Data Hold Function
- Press the HOLD button to freeze the current measurement on the display. The "HOLD" indicator will appear.
- Press the HOLD button again to release the data hold and resume real-time measurements.
4.5 Backlight Alarm Setting
- When the measured value exceeds a preset threshold, the backlight will flash as an alarm. The initial default threshold is 100dB.
- To adjust the alarm threshold: While in HOLD mode, long press the Power/Backlight button for 2 seconds. Use the left and right buttons (MIN/MAX and HOLD) to adjust the setting value. Press the Power/Backlight button again to confirm and exit the setting.
4.6 Automatic Shutdown
- The device will automatically power off after 10 minutes of inactivity to save battery.
- To disable automatic shutdown: Long press the Power/Backlight button for 3 seconds when turning on the device. The display will show "UOF" (User Off) to indicate that auto-shutdown is disabled.
5. Measurement Procedure
To take a measurement, ensure the device is powered on and held in the desired measurement area. The display will show the real-time sound level in dBA. For accurate readings, ensure the microphone is pointed towards the sound source and is not obstructed.

7. Maintenance
- Keep the device clean and dry. Avoid exposure to extreme temperatures, humidity, or direct sunlight.
- Do not drop or subject the device to strong impacts.
- When not in use for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage and damage.
- Clean the exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Ensure the windscreen is properly fitted over the microphone to protect it from dust and debris.
8. Troubleshooting
- Device does not power on: Check if the batteries are installed correctly with the right polarity. Ensure batteries are not depleted and replace if necessary.
- Inaccurate readings: Ensure the microphone is not obstructed and the windscreen is clean. Avoid measuring in strong wind without the windscreen. Check for any physical damage to the microphone.
- Display is dim or flickering: Replace batteries if the battery indicator shows low power. If the backlight is off, press the Power/Backlight button to turn it on.
- "OVER" displayed: The measured sound level exceeds the device's maximum range (130dBA). Move to a quieter environment or use a device with a higher measurement range.
