4. Setup

4.1 Choosing and Installing the Correct Spring

The tamper comes with a 25lb spring pre-installed. To change the spring:

  1. Unscrew the handle from the base of the tamper.
  2. Carefully remove the existing spring.
  3. Insert your desired 15lb or 30lb spring onto the central shaft.
  4. Screw the handle back onto the base until secure.

The choice of spring depends on your personal preference and the specific requirements of your espresso machine and coffee beans.

4.2 Compatibility

This 53.3mm tamper is designed to fit 54mm Breville portafilters, which are typically tapered. Suitable Breville/Sage models include the Barista Express, Pro, Touch, Bambino Plus, Infuser, and Duo-Temp Pro.

5. Operating Instructions

Achieving a consistent and level tamp is crucial for optimal espresso extraction. Follow these steps:

  1. Grind Coffee: Grind your fresh coffee beans to the appropriate fineness for espresso.
  2. Dose and Distribute: Fill your portafilter basket with the desired amount of ground coffee. Ensure the coffee grounds are evenly distributed in the basket. A distribution tool can assist with this.
  3. Tamp: Place the Normcore V4 tamper squarely on top of the coffee grounds in the portafilter. The collar of the tamper will rest on the rim of the portafilter, ensuring a level application.
  4. Apply Pressure: Press down firmly on the tamper handle until the internal spring fully compresses and you feel a distinct click or stop. The spring mechanism will apply the pre-set pressure (e.g., 25lb) consistently.
  5. Remove Tamper: Lift the tamper straight up from the portafilter. You should observe a perfectly level and compacted coffee bed.

6. Maintenance

Regular cleaning ensures the longevity and performance of your tamper.

  • Daily Cleaning: After each use, wipe the tamper base with a clean, dry cloth to remove any residual coffee grounds.
  • Deep Cleaning: Periodically, or as needed, disassemble the tamper (as described in Section 4.1) and clean all components with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and ensure all parts are completely dry before reassembling.
  • Storage: Store the tamper on its provided stand in a dry place to prevent damage and keep it clean.
