5. Setup and Installation

5.1 Mounting the Amplifier

Choose a secure, dry location for mounting the amplifier, away from direct heat sources and moisture. Ensure adequate ventilation around the unit. Use appropriate screws and mounting hardware to secure the amplifier firmly.

5.2 Wiring Connections

Before making any connections, disconnect the negative terminal of your vehicle's battery.

  1. Power Connection (+12V): Connect a fused power cable (minimum 8 AWG recommended) directly from the positive terminal of the vehicle's battery to the +12V terminal on the amplifier. The fuse should be located within 18 inches of the battery.
  2. Ground Connection (GND): Connect a ground cable (same gauge as power cable) from the GND terminal on the amplifier to a clean, unpainted metal surface on the vehicle's chassis. Ensure a solid, low-resistance connection.
  3. Remote Turn-On (REM): Connect a remote turn-on wire from your head unit's remote output to the REM terminal on the amplifier. This wire turns the amplifier on and off with your head unit.
  4. RCA Input Connections: Connect RCA cables from your head unit's pre-amp outputs to the CH1-CH2 and CH3-CH4 RCA inputs on the amplifier.
  5. Speaker Output Connections: Connect your speakers to the corresponding CH1, CH2, CH3, and CH4 output terminals. Pay close attention to polarity (+ and -). For bridged mode, refer to the diagram on the amplifier or the specifications section.

Note: Incorrect wiring can damage the amplifier or your vehicle's electrical system. If you are unsure, seek professional assistance.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Initial Power-Up

After all connections are made and verified, reconnect the vehicle's battery. Turn on your head unit. The amplifier should power on, indicated by an LED light (if present).

6.2 Adjusting Gain

The GAIN control matches the amplifier's input sensitivity to the output level of your head unit. Start with the gain set to minimum (MIN). Play a familiar piece of music at about 75% of your head unit's maximum volume. Slowly increase the amplifier's gain until you hear distortion, then back it off slightly until the sound is clear. Do not use the gain control as a volume knob.

6.3 Crossover Settings

The 400.4 EVO 4.0 features adjustable crossovers for channels 1-2 and 3-4:

  • LPF (Low Pass Filter): Allows only frequencies below the set point to pass through. Useful for subwoofers or mid-bass speakers.
  • HPF (High Pass Filter): Allows only frequencies above the set point to pass through. Useful for full-range or tweeter speakers to prevent low frequencies from damaging them.
  • FULL (Full Range): Bypasses the crossover, allowing all frequencies to pass.

Adjust the crossover switches (LPF/HPF/FULL) and frequency knobs (if available) according to your speaker type and desired sound. The recommended crossover frequency is 80Hz for both HPF and LPF, with a slope of 12dB/octave.

7. Maintenance

  • Keep the amplifier clean and free from dust and debris. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning.
  • Ensure proper ventilation around the amplifier to prevent overheating.
  • Periodically check all wiring connections for tightness and corrosion.
  • Do not use harsh chemicals or solvents for cleaning.

8. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Amplifier does not turn onNo power, poor ground, remote wire not connected/faulty, blown fuse.Check +12V, GND, and REM connections. Verify battery voltage and fuse integrity.
No sound outputRCA cables disconnected/faulty, speaker wires disconnected/shorted, head unit not sending signal, gain too low.Check all RCA and speaker connections. Ensure head unit is on and sending audio. Adjust gain.
Distorted soundGain set too high, improper crossover settings, speaker impedance mismatch, faulty speakers.Reduce gain. Adjust crossover settings. Verify speaker impedance. Test with different speakers if possible.
Amplifier overheatsInsufficient ventilation, speaker impedance too low, prolonged high volume use.Ensure proper airflow around the amplifier. Check speaker impedance. Reduce volume or usage time.
