2. Important Safety Instructions
Please read these instructions carefully before operating your Polk Monitor XT12 Powered Subwoofer. Keep these instructions for future reference. Adhere to all warnings and follow all instructions.
- Power Source: Only connect the subwoofer to a power supply of the type described in the operating instructions or as marked on the unit.
- Ventilation: Do not block any ventilation openings. Install in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
- Heat: Do not install near any heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus (including amplifiers) that produce heat.
- Polarized Plug: Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized or grounding-type plug. A polarized plug has two blades with one wider than the other. A grounding-type plug has two blades and a third grounding prong. The wide blade or the third prong are provided for your safety. If the provided plug does not fit into your outlet, consult an electrician for replacement of the obsolete outlet.
- Power Cord Protection: Protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched, particularly at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they exit from the apparatus.
- Cleaning: Clean only with a dry cloth.
- Water and Moisture: Do not use this apparatus near water. Do not expose to dripping or splashing.
- Servicing: Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. Servicing is required when the apparatus has been damaged in any way, such as power-supply cord or plug is damaged, liquid has been spilled or objects have fallen into the apparatus, the apparatus has been exposed to rain or moisture, does not operate normally, or has been dropped.
3. Setup and Installation
3.1 Unpacking
Carefully remove the subwoofer from its packaging. Inspect the unit for any signs of damage during transit. If any damage is observed, do not use the unit and contact your dealer immediately. Retain the original packaging for future transport or storage.
3.2 Placement
The placement of your subwoofer significantly impacts its performance. Experiment with different locations to find the best sound for your room.
- Corner Placement: Placing the subwoofer in a corner of the room often maximizes its output and impact.
- Front of Room: Placing it near your front speakers can create a more seamless soundstage.
- "Subwoofer Crawl": For optimal placement, place the subwoofer in your primary listening position, then crawl around the room to find where the bass sounds best. This is where the subwoofer should be placed.
- Avoid Obstructions: Ensure the subwoofer is not blocked by furniture or other objects that could impede sound dispersion or ventilation.

3.3 Connections
The Monitor XT12 offers various connection options to integrate with your home theater system.
- LFE (Low-Frequency Effects) Input: This is the recommended connection for most modern AV receivers with a dedicated subwoofer output. Connect a single RCA cable from your receiver's "Subwoofer Out" or "LFE Out" to the LFE input on the XT12.
- Line-Level (RCA) Inputs: If your receiver does not have an LFE output, you can use the stereo RCA inputs. Connect RCA cables from your receiver's "Pre-Out" or "Subwoofer Pre-Out" (if available) to the left and right line-level inputs on the XT12.
- Speaker Level Inputs: For receivers without dedicated subwoofer outputs, you can connect the subwoofer using speaker wires. Connect the speaker outputs from your receiver to the speaker level inputs on the XT12, and then connect your main speakers to the speaker level outputs on the XT12. Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -).

3.4 Power Connection
Once all audio connections are made, connect the supplied power cord to the subwoofer's power inlet and then to a suitable wall outlet.
4. Operating Instructions
4.1 Initial Power On
After connecting the subwoofer, turn on your AV receiver and the subwoofer. The XT12 has an auto-on/off feature that detects an audio signal and powers on automatically. It will enter standby mode after a period of inactivity.
4.2 Controls and Adjustments
The Polk Monitor XT12 features several controls on its rear panel to fine-tune its performance to your listening environment and main speakers.
- Volume Control: Adjusts the overall output level of the subwoofer. Start with the volume at about half, then adjust to blend seamlessly with your main speakers.
- Variable Crossover (80-160Hz): This control determines the highest frequency the subwoofer will reproduce. Set this based on the low-frequency capabilities of your main speakers. If your main speakers are small, set a higher crossover (e.g., 100-120Hz). If they are large floor-standing speakers, a lower setting (e.g., 80Hz) may be appropriate. If using an AV receiver with bass management, set the subwoofer's crossover to its maximum (160Hz) and manage the crossover through your receiver.
- Phase Polarity (0/180): This switch helps to ensure that the subwoofer's output is in phase with your main speakers. Listen to music with strong bass and switch between 0 and 180 degrees. Choose the setting that provides the most impactful and cohesive bass.

4.3 System Calibration
For optimal performance, especially in a home theater setup, use your AV receiver's automatic room correction system (e.g., Audyssey, MCACC, YPAO) after connecting the subwoofer. This will calibrate the subwoofer's level, distance, and crossover settings for your specific room.
5. Maintenance and Care
Proper care will ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Polk Monitor XT12 subwoofer.
- Cleaning the Cabinet: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the cabinet. Avoid using harsh chemicals, cleaning sprays, or abrasive materials, as they can damage the finish.
- Cleaning the Grille: The removable grille can be gently vacuumed with a soft brush attachment to remove dust.
- Avoid Direct Sunlight and Heat: Do not place the subwoofer in direct sunlight or near heat sources, as this can cause discoloration or damage to internal components.
- Ventilation: Ensure adequate airflow around the subwoofer to prevent overheating. Do not block the rear port or any ventilation openings.
- Power Off When Not in Use: If the subwoofer will not be used for an extended period, it is advisable to unplug it from the power outlet.
