1. Introduction
This instruction manual provides detailed guidance for assembling the Penn State Industries PKMAFGPJR Majestic Junior Fountain Pen Kit. This kit contains the hardware components necessary to create a finished fountain pen through woodturning. Please read all instructions carefully before beginning the project.
Important Note: This is a woodturning project kit. A lathe is required to turn the raw material (blanks) into a finished pen. Blanks, bushing set, drill bit, and other turning tools and supplies are not included with this kit.
2. Safety Information
Always prioritize safety when working with power tools, especially a wood lathe. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety glasses or a face shield. Ensure your workspace is clean and well-lit. Follow all safety guidelines provided with your wood lathe and other turning tools.

6. Setup and Preparation
6.1 Preparing the Blank
- Mark the center of each blank.
- Cut two sections to the length of each tube. Add 1/16" for trimming.
- Drill the upper blank (shorter tube) with a .492" hole through.
- Drill the lower blank (longer tube) with a 10.5mm hole through.
NOTE:
Sand the tubes using 220-grit abrasive for better adhesion.- Glue each tube into the proper blank. Spread the glue evenly over each tube. Insert the tube into the blank with a twisting motion to spread the glue evenly inside. Center each tube lengthwise inside the blank.
- When the glue dries, square the ends of each blank using a 7mm barrel trimmer with adapter sleeves (#PKMAJJRBTS). Mount the proper sleeve (large diameter for the short tube, smaller diameter for the longer tube) over the shank with the brass tube.

Figure 2: Diagram showing the parts list (Diagram A) and the process for turning the blanks (Diagram B). Diagram A illustrates the individual components of the pen kit, while Diagram B details how to mount and prepare the pen blanks on a mandrel for turning.
6.2 Turning the Blank
- Mount 7mm spacer bushings on the mandrel, followed by the tip bushing (shorter diameter, wide end first).
- Slide the lower blank (long) on next. Follow with the center bushing, narrow diameter first.
- Slide on the upper blank (short) and follow with the cap bushing, narrow end first.
- Add additional spacer bushings as necessary to overlap the mandrel.
- Tighten the lock-nut hand tight. Bring the tailstock in snug to the mandrel. Tighten the lock-nut for turning. Do not over-tighten the lock nut as it may damage the mandrel.
- Turn the blanks down close to the bushings. Follow with abrasives until the tube diameters are flush with the bushings.
- Finish with your choice of polish.

Figure 3: Diagram C illustrates the specific dimensions and arrangement of the PKMAJJRBU bushing set, crucial for accurate turning of the pen blanks.
7. Assembly
Assemble the components according to Diagram A (Figure 2).
- Press the center band assembly into the upper barrel (shorter tube).
- Press the end cap and clip into the opposite end of the upper barrel.
- Press both couplers into either end of the lower barrel.
- Thread the lower cap into the top of the lower barrel.
8. Operating the Pen
8.1 Fountain Pen Operation
- The threads on the pen cap have three starting points so you can quickly close the pen in any of these positions.
- To install the ink cartridge: Press the ink cartridge, narrow end first, into the back of the fountain nib. Push in to break the seal.
- To use the premium pump (converter): Insert the converter into the nib assembly. Submerge the nib into ink and twist or slide the converter mechanism to draw ink into the reservoir.
- Thread the fountain nib assembly over the threaded coupler.
8.2 Rollerball Pen (If applicable, based on kit type)
Note: This specific kit is for a Fountain Pen. If you have a Rollerball version of the Majestic Junior kit, the following general instructions apply:
- Drop the refill spring into the lower barrel.
- Discard the rollerball refill cover. Insert the rollerball refill, flat end first, into the threaded coupler over the spring.
- Thread the rollerball tip over the refill into the threaded coupler.

9. Maintenance
- Cleaning the Nib: For fountain pens, regularly flush the nib with cool water, especially when changing ink colors or if the pen has been unused for a period. Use a bulb syringe for thorough cleaning if needed.
- Ink Cartridge/Converter Care: Ensure ink cartridges are properly seated. If using a converter, clean it periodically by flushing with water.
- Barrel Care: The turned wood barrel can be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals that may damage the finish.
- Storage: Store the pen capped to prevent the nib from drying out.
10. Troubleshooting
- Ink Flow Issues:
- Ensure the ink cartridge is fully pierced or the converter is properly filled.
- Flush the nib thoroughly with water to remove any dried ink or debris.
- Check if the nib tines are properly aligned.
- Loose Components:
- If any pressed components feel loose, they may need to be re-pressed with appropriate pressure or secured with a small amount of adhesive.
- Pen Not Writing Smoothly:
- Ensure the nib is clean and free of obstructions.
- Check the quality of the ink.
