1. Introduction
The UNI-T UT201R is a True RMS digital clamp meter designed for measuring AC current, AC/DC voltage, resistance, continuity, diode, and frequency. This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective use of the device, including setup, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
Please read this manual thoroughly before operating the UT201R to ensure proper functionality and to prevent potential hazards.
2. Safety Information
Warning: To avoid electric shock or personal injury, read the safety information carefully before using the meter. Observe all common safety practices related to working with electricity.
- Do not apply more than the rated voltage, as marked on the meter, between the terminals or between any terminal and earth ground.
- Use caution when working with voltages above 30V AC RMS, 42V peak, or 60V DC. These voltages pose a shock hazard.
- Before each use, inspect the meter and test leads for any damage. Do not use if damaged.
- Ensure the function switch is in the correct position for the measurement being performed.
- Do not use the meter in explosive gas, vapor, or dusty environments.
- Keep fingers behind the finger guards on the test probes during measurements.
- Remove test leads from the circuit before changing functions.
- Replace the battery immediately when the low battery indicator appears to ensure accurate readings.
- Adhere to IEC 61010 safety standards. The UT201R is rated CAT III 300V and CAT II 600V.

5. Setup
5.1 Battery Installation
The UT201R requires two AAA batteries (not always included, check packaging). To install or replace batteries:
- Ensure the meter is turned OFF and no test leads are connected.
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the meter (refer to Figure 3.3).
- Use a screwdriver to loosen the screw(s) on the battery cover.
- Remove the cover and insert the batteries, observing correct polarity (+ and -).
- Replace the battery cover and tighten the screw(s).
Note: Remove batteries if the meter is not used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
5.2 Connecting Test Leads
For voltage, resistance, continuity, diode, and frequency measurements, connect the test leads as follows:
- Insert the black test lead into the COM input jack.
- Insert the red test lead into the VℹHz input jack.
Ensure connections are firm before taking any measurements.
6. Operating Instructions
Always ensure the meter is set to the correct function before making any measurement.
6.1 AC Current Measurement
- Turn the function dial to the 40A~ or 400A~ position.
- Open the clamp jaw by pressing the trigger.
- Enclose only one conductor of the circuit within the clamp jaw. Ensure the jaw is fully closed.
- Read the AC current value on the LCD display.
Note: Do not clamp multiple conductors simultaneously, as this will result in an inaccurate reading (the magnetic fields will cancel each other out).

Figure 6.1: Measuring AC current with the clamp jaw around a single conductor.
6.2 AC/DC Voltage Measurement
- Connect the test leads as described in Section 5.2.
- Turn the function dial to the V∼ (AC Voltage) or V— (DC Voltage) position. If the dial position is shared, press the SELECT button to toggle between AC and DC.
- Connect the test probes in parallel to the circuit or component being measured.
- Read the voltage value on the LCD display.
6.3 Resistance Measurement
- Ensure the circuit is de-energized before measuring resistance.
- Connect the test leads as described in Section 5.2.
- Turn the function dial to the Ω position. Press SELECT if needed to choose resistance mode.
- Connect the test probes across the component to be measured.
- Read the resistance value on the LCD display.
6.4 Continuity Test
- Ensure the circuit is de-energized.
- Connect the test leads as described in Section 5.2.
- Turn the function dial to the Ω position and press SELECT until the continuity symbol (♫) appears on the display.
- Connect the test probes across the circuit or component.
- If continuity exists (resistance below a certain threshold), the meter will emit an audible beep.
6.5 Diode Test
- Ensure the circuit is de-energized.
- Connect the test leads as described in Section 5.2.
- Turn the function dial to the Ω position and press SELECT until the diode symbol (▲) appears on the display.
- Connect the red test probe to the anode and the black test probe to the cathode of the diode.
- The display will show the forward voltage drop. Reverse the probes; an open circuit reading indicates a good diode.
6.6 Frequency Measurement
- Connect the test leads as described in Section 5.2.
- Turn the function dial to the Hz position (often shared with voltage or current, use SELECT if necessary).
- Connect the test probes in parallel to the circuit where frequency is to be measured.
- Read the frequency value in Hertz (Hz) on the LCD display.
6.7 Non-Contact Voltage (NCV) Detection
- Turn the function dial to the NCV position.
- Move the NCV sensor (located at the top of the clamp jaw) close to the conductor or outlet.
- If AC voltage is detected, the meter will emit an audible beep and the NCV indicator light will flash. The intensity of the beeping and flashing may increase with stronger fields.
Warning: NCV detection is for indication only. Always verify voltage presence or absence with direct contact measurement before working on a circuit.
7. Maintenance
7.1 Cleaning
Wipe the meter casing with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Ensure the meter is completely dry before use.
7.2 Battery Replacement
When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace the batteries as described in Section 5.1. Always use new batteries of the specified type.
7.3 Calibration
The UT201R is factory calibrated. For professional calibration services, contact UNI-T customer support or an authorized service center.
8. Troubleshooting
If the meter does not function correctly, refer to the following common issues and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No display or dim display | Dead or low batteries; incorrect battery polarity. | Replace batteries; check battery orientation. |
| Inaccurate readings | Incorrect function selected; poor test lead connection; external interference. | Verify function dial position; ensure leads are firmly connected; move away from strong electromagnetic fields. |
| "OL" (Overload) displayed | Input value exceeds the meter's range. | Select a higher range (if available) or ensure the measurement is within the meter's capabilities. |
| No continuity beep | Circuit is open; continuity threshold not met. | Check circuit for breaks; ensure resistance is below the meter's continuity threshold. |
If the problem persists, contact UNI-T customer support.
