2. Safety Information
WARNING: Laser radiation can cause severe injury. Always wear appropriate eye protection and ensure proper ventilation during operation. Never leave the machine unattended while in use.
- Ensure the machine is properly grounded to prevent electrical shock.
- Maintain a clean and well-ventilated workspace to prevent fume accumulation.
- Always verify water flow through the laser tube before starting the laser engraver.
- Familiarize yourself with the emergency stop button and its function.
- Do not operate the machine in enclosed spaces without adequate exhaust.
3. Setup
3.1 Unpacking and Component Identification
Carefully unpack the laser engraver and its accessories. Place the machine on a stable workbench.
Video 1: This video demonstrates the unpacking process and identification of all included components for the OMTech K40+ CO2 Laser Engraver. It shows how to safely remove the machine from its packaging and lay out all accessories.
Verify that all components listed in the packing list are present:
- Water pump
- Silicone sealant
- Focusing ruler
- Power cord
- Clamp
- Tape
- USB cable
- USB drive (with software)
- Transparent acrylic test plate
- Keys
- Open-end wrench
- Ceramic resistor
- Instruction manual
- Smoke pipe
3.2 Water Pump Installation and Cooling
The water pump is crucial for cooling the laser tube. Ensure it is correctly installed and maintained.
- Add distilled water (15-21°C) to a water tank, maintaining at least 2 gallons.
- Install the suction cup and outlet on the water pump.
- Connect the pre-installed blue hose on the machine to the water pump.
- Fully submerge the water pump in the water tank.
- Place the other hose in the tank to ensure return water flows back without splashing.
- Connect the water pump to a separate power supply.
- Ensure no air bubbles larger than 1cm in diameter inside the laser tube. If bubbles are present, tilt the machine on the left side until they disappear, then level the machine.
Tip: If the temperature drops below 0°C, use antifreeze specifically designed for lasers.
3.3 Exhaust System Setup
Proper ventilation is vital for safety and to remove fumes and debris.
- Use a clamp to connect one end of the provided 1500mm exhaust hose to the exhaust fan outlet and secure it.
- If fumes are non-hazardous and comply with local air safety standards, place the other end of the pipe outside a window.
Tip: Never use the machine in enclosed spaces. Alternatively, purchase a dedicated fume purifier.
3.4 Electrical Grounding Setup
Proper grounding prevents static accumulation and electrical shock hazards.
- Use a standard three-prong socket.
- Properly use a grounding cable to avoid static accumulation.
- Connect one end of the main cable to the socket and the other end to a grounded socket.
3.5 Air Assist Check
The air assist system helps keep the work area clean and improves cutting accuracy.
- Turn on the machine after the engraver is powered on and the emergency stop is released.
- If the nozzles of the laser head start to spray pressurized air, the assist device is functioning properly.
3.6 Safety Settings Check
Verify the functionality of safety features.
- Activate the emergency stop button.
- Turn on the key switch, ensuring the LCD display lights up.
- Press the emergency stop button. If the entire machine powers down, it indicates that the emergency stop button is functioning properly.
- Start the water cooling system.
- Close the cover. Check if the 'water protect' signal on the LCD display is ON.
- Open the cover or disconnect the water pump to see if the signal changes to OFF. If the signal changes, it indicates that the automatic shutoff function is effective and you can continue operations.
3.7 Software Installation and Connection
The OMTech K40+ is compatible with LaserGRBL and LightBurn software.
- Access the USB flash drive provided with the engraving machine.
- Copy the contents to the computer's hard drive.
- Install LaserGRBL.
- Open the software LaserGRBL in the control computer.
- Install the CH341 driver compatible with the control computer system.
- Choose to install the driver.
- Connect the computer to the machine using the provided USB cable.
- Click "connect". If "omtech" appears in the left console, it means the software has successfully connected to the machine.
- Set the machine parameters (parameters can be seen in the file screenshot).
- Confirm the machine parameters in the software and control the machine.
If you need to use LightBurn, download the software on the control computer in advance, follow the software guide, set the software parameters and control the machine.
4. Operating
4.1 Pre-Engraving Checks
- Check if there is enough clean, cool distilled water in the water tank.
- Check if the water flow passes through the entire system (observe the laser tube or the outlet pipe). Ensure no bubbles inside the laser tube.
- Check if the fume extractor or ventilation system is open.
- Insert the key and rotate to start the laser power.
- Rotate the potentiometer counterclockwise to adjust the power to about 15%.
Tip: Before engraving, press the current button to set it to the maximum, otherwise the power will be low.
4.2 Laser Path Alignment
- Stick tape in front of the third mirror.
- Move the laser head to the upper left corner.
- Press the red test button.
- Then move the laser head to the other three corners and press the test button at each.
- The laser will scorch the tape four times, producing spots.
- Remove the tape. If the optical path is aligned, the spots at all four corners should coincide.
- Place new tape under the nozzle of the laser head and press the red test button. The spot should be in the center of the nozzle.
4.3 Material Placement and Focus Adjustment
- Open the engraver's cover.
- Place a dry, clean piece of material on the workbed.
- Loosen the locking screw on the laser head.
- Place the focal ruler between the material and the laser head nozzle.
- Manually adjust the height of the laser head nozzle so that it just touches the top surface of the focal ruler.
4.4 Engraving/Cutting Process
- Import your design (e.g., OMTech logo) into the LaserGRBL software.
- Set parameters to engrave on the wooden board.
- Close the protective cover and start engraving.
- Set the engraving parameters.
- Close the protective cover and cut the wooden board.
4.5 Handling Thick Materials
If you need to engrave thick materials, you should take out the drawer, remove the honeycomb board, and then put the drawer back. After placing the material, you also need to adjust the focus distance.

Image 1: Close-up view of the adjustable laser head on the OMTech K40+ engraver, demonstrating how to manually adjust the focus for different material thicknesses. This ensures precise engraving and cutting results.

Image 2: An illustration of the integrated air assist system in action, showing air blowing away smoke and debris from the laser's path. This feature helps maintain a clean work area and improves engraving quality.

Image 3: A view of the detachable honeycomb workbed, which can be removed to accommodate thicker materials or a rotary axis for cylindrical objects. This enhances the machine's versatility.

Image 4: Close-up of the digital ammeter display, showing the current output in milliamperes (mA). This allows for precise control over laser power settings during operation.
5. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your laser engraver.
- Clean Lenses and Mirrors: Regularly inspect and clean the optical components (lenses and mirrors) using appropriate cleaning solutions and lint-free wipes to maintain laser beam quality.
- Water Cooling System: Periodically check the water level and temperature. Replace distilled water as needed and ensure the pump is free of debris.
- Exhaust System: Clean the exhaust fan and ducting to prevent buildup of smoke and particulate matter, which can reduce efficiency and pose fire hazards.
- Lubricate Moving Parts: Apply a small amount of lubricant to the guide rails and bearings to ensure smooth movement of the laser head.
6. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter during operation.
- Laser Not Firing: Check the water protection sensor, ensure the lid is closed, and verify the laser power settings.
- Poor Engraving/Cutting Quality: Check laser focus, material settings (speed, power), and ensure the optical path is aligned. Clean lenses and mirrors if necessary.
- Software Connection Issues: Verify USB cable connection, ensure drivers are correctly installed, and restart both the machine and computer.
- Excessive Smoke/Fumes: Check exhaust fan operation, ensure ducting is clear, and verify proper ventilation.
