Focal 100IWSUB8 High Power Passive Bass-Reflex Subwoofer and Amplifier User Manual

1. Introduction

This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your Focal 100IWSUB8 High Power Passive Bass-Reflex Subwoofer and its accompanying 100 IWSUB8 Amplifier. Please read this manual thoroughly before attempting to install or operate the system to ensure proper function and safety.

2. Safety Instructions

Observe the following safety precautions to prevent damage to the equipment or personal injury:

  • Power Supply: Ensure the amplifier is connected to a power outlet with the correct voltage (100-120V~60Hz or 220-230V~50Hz) as specified on the unit.
  • Ventilation: Do not block ventilation openings. Ensure adequate airflow around the amplifier to prevent overheating.
  • Moisture: Do not expose the unit to water, rain, or excessive humidity.
  • Placement: Install the subwoofer and amplifier in a stable location, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and strong vibrations.
  • Servicing: Do not attempt to service the unit yourself. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel.
  • Wiring: Ensure all wiring connections are secure and correct before powering on the system.

3. Package Contents

Verify that all components are present in the package:

  • Focal 100IWSUB8 Passive Bass-Reflex Subwoofer
  • Focal 100 IWSUB8 Amplifier
  • Low profile magnetic grille
  • Detachable IEC power cord
  • Mounting hardware (if applicable)

4. Setup and Installation

4.1 Subwoofer Installation

The Focal 100IWSUB8 is designed for in-wall installation, fitting within standard 16-inch on-center (OC) joists. Its shallow depth (3 3/8 inches or 86mm) allows for discreet integration.

  1. Location Selection: Choose a suitable in-wall location, ensuring there are no obstructions (electrical wires, plumbing) behind the drywall. The subwoofer requires a cut-out dimension of 13 7/8 x 5 13/16 inches (352 x 1,300mm).
  2. Prepare Opening: Carefully cut the opening in the wall according to the specified dimensions.
  3. Wiring: Run speaker wire from the amplifier location to the subwoofer opening. Ensure proper polarity.
  4. Mounting: Insert the subwoofer into the opening. Secure it using the provided mounting hardware. The subwoofer features an 8-inch Polyglass speaker driver and a front vent designed for no-noise operation.
  5. Grille Attachment: Once the subwoofer is securely installed, attach the low-profile magnetic grille. The grille is paint-ready, allowing it to blend seamlessly with your wall color.

4.2 Amplifier Connection

The Focal 100 IWSUB8 Amplifier is designed to power the 100IWSUB8 subwoofer. It can drive up to two 100IWSUB8 subwoofers connected in parallel.

  1. Placement: Position the amplifier in a well-ventilated area, preferably in an equipment rack or on a stable surface.
  2. Speaker Connection: Connect the speaker wire(s) from the subwoofer(s) to the 'SPEAKER OUTPUT' terminals on the rear of the amplifier. Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -). The amplifier supports a minimum load of 4 ohms.
  3. Audio Input: Connect your audio source (e.g., AV receiver's LFE output, or Line In L/R) to the 'INPUT' section on the amplifier's rear panel.
  4. Power Connection: Connect the detachable IEC power cord to the amplifier and then to a suitable wall outlet.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Amplifier Controls

The front panel of the 100 IWSUB8 Amplifier features several controls for fine-tuning the subwoofer's performance:

  • Crossover: Adjusts the upper frequency limit of the subwoofer. This should be set to blend smoothly with your main speakers. The range is typically 40Hz to 160Hz.
  • Phase: Allows adjustment of the subwoofer's phase (0° or 180°) to ensure it is in phase with your main speakers, preventing cancellation at the crossover frequency.
  • Volume: Controls the output level of the subwoofer. Adjust this to achieve a balanced sound with your main speakers.
  • Auto/On/Off: The amplifier features an auto-sensing power mode. In 'Auto' mode, the amplifier will turn on when an audio signal is detected and enter standby after a period of inactivity. 'On' keeps the amplifier continuously active, and 'Off' powers it down.
  • Status Indicator: An LED light indicates the operational status of the amplifier (e.g., power on, standby, protection mode).

5.2 Input and Output Connections

The rear panel provides the following connections:

  • LFE Input: For connecting to the Low-Frequency Effects output of an AV receiver.
  • Line In L/R: For connecting to stereo line-level outputs from an audio source.
  • Line Out L/R: Provides a pass-through for the input signal to connect to other audio components.
  • Subwoofer Power Output (Speaker Terminal): Connects directly to the passive 100IWSUB8 subwoofer(s).

6. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Focal subwoofer and amplifier, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the surfaces of the amplifier and subwoofer grille. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, solvents, or chemical sprays.
  • Dust: Regularly dust the amplifier's ventilation openings to prevent dust buildup, which can impede cooling.
  • Connections: Periodically check all cable connections to ensure they are secure and free from corrosion.
  • Environment: Maintain a stable room temperature and humidity level. Avoid extreme temperatures or sudden changes.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Focal subwoofer system, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  • No Sound:
    • Check if the amplifier is powered on and the status indicator is active.
    • Verify all audio input and speaker output connections are secure and correctly wired.
    • Ensure the volume control on the amplifier is not set to minimum.
    • Check the audio source for proper output.
  • Distorted Sound:
    • Reduce the volume level on the amplifier or your audio source.
    • Check speaker wire connections for shorts or loose strands.
    • Ensure the subwoofer is not overdriven.
  • Humming or Buzzing Noise:
    • Ensure all components are properly grounded.
    • Try connecting the amplifier to a different power outlet.
    • Check for interference from other electronic devices.
  • Amplifier Overheating:
    • Ensure adequate ventilation around the amplifier.
    • Reduce the operating volume.
    • Check if the speaker load is within the amplifier's specifications (minimum 4 ohms).

If these steps do not resolve the issue, contact Focal customer support or a qualified service technician.
