4.1 Rear Panel Controls and Connections
The rear panel provides all necessary inputs, outputs, and controls for integrating the subwoofer into your audio system.

Figure 2: Detailed view of the rear panel showing inputs, outputs, and master controls.
- Inputs: Two XLR-1/4" combo inputs (Left/Right) and two RCA inputs (Left/Right) for versatile connection to various audio sources.
- Outputs: Two through XLR outputs (Left/Right) for passing the full-range signal to other speakers, and two 100Hz high-pass XLR outputs (Left/Right) for connecting to satellite speakers. Two RCA outputs are also available.
- Phase Switch: Allows adjustment of the subwoofer's phase (0° or 180°) to optimize alignment with other speakers.
- Volume Control: Adjusts the overall output level of the subwoofer.
- Low Pass Filter (LPF): A variable control (40Hz - 160Hz) to set the upper frequency limit of the subwoofer, ensuring smooth integration with full-range speakers.
- Indicators: LED indicators for Power, Signal, and Clip status.
- AC Input: Power connection with voltage selector (115V/230V) and power switch.
5. Setup
Follow these steps to set up your Sound Town METIS-18PWG subwoofer:
- Placement: Position the subwoofer in a stable location. Consider room acoustics and desired bass response. The integrated 35mm pole mount socket allows for mounting a satellite speaker directly above the subwoofer.
- Power Connection: Ensure the voltage selector on the rear panel matches your local power supply (115V or 230V). Connect the provided power cable to the AC input on the subwoofer and then to a grounded power outlet. Ensure the power switch is in the OFF position before connecting.
- Audio Input Connection:
- From Mixer/Audio Source: Connect the main outputs of your mixer or audio source to the XLR-1/4" combo inputs or RCA inputs on the subwoofer.
- To Satellite Speakers (Full-Range): If using satellite speakers, connect the XLR through outputs of the subwoofer to the inputs of your full-range speakers. This passes the full audio signal.
- To Satellite Speakers (High-Pass): For systems where satellite speakers handle frequencies above 100Hz, connect the 100Hz high-pass XLR outputs of the subwoofer to the inputs of your satellite speakers.
- Initial Settings: Before powering on, set the Volume control to its minimum position. Set the Low Pass Filter (LPF) to a starting point, typically around 80Hz-100Hz, and the Phase switch to 0°.

6. Operating Instructions
Once the subwoofer is set up, follow these steps for operation:
- Power On: Turn on your mixer or audio source first, then switch on the power for the METIS-18PWG subwoofer. The Power LED should illuminate.
- Adjust Volume: Gradually increase the Volume control on the subwoofer to achieve the desired bass level. Monitor the Signal and Clip LEDs. The Signal LED indicates an active audio signal, while the Clip LED warns of signal overload, which can cause distortion. Reduce the volume if the Clip LED illuminates frequently.
- Low Pass Filter (LPF) Adjustment: Adjust the LPF knob to blend the subwoofer's output seamlessly with your main speakers. A lower setting (e.g., 80Hz) is typical for larger main speakers, while a higher setting (e.g., 120Hz) might be suitable for smaller satellite speakers. Experiment to find the optimal crossover point for your system.
- Phase Adjustment: If the bass sounds weak or undefined, try flipping the Phase switch (0° to 180°). This can correct phase cancellations between the subwoofer and main speakers, resulting in a more impactful and coherent bass response. Listen for the setting that provides the strongest and clearest bass.
- Power Off: When finished, turn off the subwoofer first, then your mixer or audio source.
7. Maintenance
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your subwoofer:
- Cleaning: Clean the exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or waxes. Ensure ventilation openings are free from dust and debris.
- Storage: If storing the subwoofer for an extended period, ensure it is in a dry, cool environment, protected from dust and extreme temperatures.
- Inspection: Periodically check the power cord and audio cables for any signs of damage. Replace damaged cables immediately.
- Ventilation: Ensure adequate airflow around the rear panel to prevent overheating of the amplifier. Do not obstruct the fan or vents.
