Setup

1. Charging the Device

Before first use, fully charge your Edge 1040. The device uses a Lithium Polymer battery and can provide up to 35 hours of battery life in demanding use cases, and up to 70 hours in battery saver mode. Connect the device to a USB power source using the provided USB cable.

2. Mounting the Device

The Garmin Edge 1040 is designed to be mounted on your bicycle handlebars or stem. Use the included mounts and follow the instructions provided with the mounting kit to securely attach the device to your bike. Ensure the mount is firm and the device clicks into place.

3. Initial Power On and Pairing

Press and hold the power button to turn on the device. Follow the on-screen prompts for initial setup, including language selection and basic profile information. For full functionality, pair your Edge 1040 with the Garmin Connect smart-device app via Bluetooth. This allows for simplified setup, data field adjustments, and connection to various platforms like Strava and Komoot.

Smart Connectivity

The Edge 1040 offers various connectivity options:

  • Garmin Connect App: Required for connecting to apps like Strava, Komoot, and TrainingPeaks.
  • inReach Device Compatibility: Pair with an inReach device to view/reply to messages, share trip data, and trigger SOS alerts (active satellite subscription required).

Maintenance

Cleaning the Device

Regularly clean your Edge 1040 to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Use a soft, damp cloth to wipe the screen and casing. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the device. Ensure the USB port cover is securely closed to prevent water and dust ingress.

Battery Care

To maximize battery life, avoid exposing the device to extreme temperatures. For long-term storage, charge the device to approximately 50% and store it in a cool, dry place. Recharge every few months to prevent deep discharge.

Storage

When not in use, store the device in a safe place away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and moisture. Protect the screen from scratches by using a screen protector or storing it in a protective pouch.

Troubleshooting

GPS Signal Issues

  • Ensure you are in an open area with a clear view of the sky.
  • Allow the device sufficient time to acquire satellite signals, especially after being in a new location.
  • Verify that multi-band GNSS is enabled in settings for improved accuracy.

Connectivity Problems (Bluetooth/Sensors)

  • Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on both your Edge 1040 and your smartphone.
  • Restart both devices.
  • Remove and re-pair the device in the Garmin Connect app.
  • For sensors, ensure they are awake and have fresh batteries. Try re-pairing them with the Edge 1040.

Battery Draining Quickly

  • Reduce screen brightness.
  • Disable unnecessary features like Wi-Fi or excessive sensor connections when not in use.
  • Ensure the device software is up to date.
  • Consider using battery saver mode for longer rides.
