Setup
- Initial Oil Fill: Before first use, ensure the oil reservoir is filled to the MAX line using the provided Fieldpiece vacuum pump oil. Unscrew the large black cap on top of the unit and carefully pour the oil into the reservoir. The clear sight glass allows you to monitor the oil level.
- Power Connection: Connect the power cord to the designated port on the side of the vacuum pump. Ensure the connection is secure to prevent accidental disconnection during operation.
- Hose Connection: The VP87 features four inline ports for hose management: 1/4", 1/2", and two 3/8" ports. Connect your vacuum hoses to the appropriate ports on the pump and to the system being evacuated. Ensure all connections are tight to prevent leaks.
Operating Instructions
- Power On: Flip the power switch to the 'ON' position. The pump will begin operation.
- Gas Ballast Valve: For initial pull-down, it is recommended to open the gas ballast valve (located on the side of the unit) to help remove moisture and speed up the process. Once the vacuum reaches approximately 3000 microns, close the gas ballast valve for a deeper vacuum.
- Monitoring Vacuum: Use a micron gauge (not included) to monitor the vacuum level of the system. Continue operation until the desired vacuum level is achieved.
- RunQuick Oil Change System: This system allows for oil changes without shutting down the pump or losing vacuum.
- To drain old oil: While the pump is running, open the valve on the left oil reservoir. The old oil will drain into the empty container.
- To add new oil: Close the drain valve. Remove the black cap on top of the unit and pour new Fieldpiece vacuum pump oil into the reservoir until the level is between the MIN and MAX lines in the sight glass.
- Exhaust Port: A garden hose can be connected to the exhaust port on the side of the unit to direct exhaust away from the work area.

Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Fieldpiece VP87 Vacuum Pump.
- Oil Changes: The RunQuick Oil Change System allows for easy oil changes. Monitor the oil in the sight glass; change oil when it appears dirty or discolored. Always use genuine Fieldpiece vacuum pump oil.
- Cleaning: Keep the exterior of the pump clean and free of debris. Regularly check the air intake and exhaust vents for obstructions and clear them to ensure proper airflow and cooling.
- Storage: When not in use, store the vacuum pump in a clean, dry environment. Ensure all ports are capped to prevent contaminants from entering the pump.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your VP87 Vacuum Pump, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:
- Pump Not Starting:
- Check power connection and ensure the power switch is in the 'ON' position.
- Verify the power outlet is functional.
- Slow Vacuum Pull-Down:
- Check for leaks in hoses or system connections.
- Ensure the oil is clean and at the correct level. Dirty oil can significantly reduce performance.
- Confirm the gas ballast valve is open during initial pull-down, then closed for deeper vacuum.
- Check for obstructions in the pump's intake or exhaust.
- Oil Discoloration/Contamination:
- Perform an oil change using the RunQuick Oil Change System.
- Ensure the system being evacuated is free of excessive moisture or contaminants before connecting the pump.
