Sky-Watcher V5 Hand Controller User Manual

Model: S30106

Introduction

This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the Sky-Watcher V5 Hand Controller, designed for use with EQ and AZ Telescope Control systems. The V5 Hand Controller offers precise control and access to an extensive celestial object database, enhancing your astronomical observations.

Key Features

  • Extensive Object Database: The SynScan hand controller includes a database of over 42,000 celestial objects, providing a vast selection for observation.
  • USB-B 2.0 Port: Features a built-in USB-B 2.0 port for convenient PC control and firmware updates. In PC Direct Mode, the hand control acts as a repeater between the PC and the telescope mount's motor controller, allowing direct application control from the PC.
  • Compatibility: Specifically designed for compatibility with Sky-Watcher SynScan mounts and supports DSLR control via the SNAP port.
  • Included Cables: Comes with necessary cables for connection to both EQ (Equatorial) and AZ (Alt-Azimuth) Sky-Watcher mounts.

Setup

1. Connecting to Your Mount

  1. Identify the correct cable for your Sky-Watcher mount (EQ or AZ).
  2. Connect one end of the cable to the appropriate port on your telescope mount.
  3. Connect the other end of the cable to one of the RJ-style ports on the bottom of the V5 Hand Controller (refer to Figure 4).
  4. Ensure all connections are secure.

2. Powering On

Once connected to the mount, the hand controller will typically power on with the mount. Follow your telescope mount's specific instructions for initial power-up and alignment procedures.

3. Initial Alignment

For accurate tracking and Go-To functionality, perform a star alignment procedure as guided by the hand controller's on-screen prompts. This usually involves selecting a few bright stars for calibration.

Operating the Hand Controller

Navigating Menus

  • Use the MENU button to access the main menu options.
  • Use the directional arrow buttons (up, down, left, right) to navigate through menu items and adjust settings.
  • Press ENTER to select an option or confirm a setting.
  • Press ESC to go back to the previous screen or exit a menu.

Object Database Access

The hand controller provides access to a vast database of celestial objects. Use the dedicated buttons (e.g., TOUR, PLANET, OBJECT, NGC, IC, USER) to quickly access different categories of objects. Input specific object numbers or names as prompted by the system.

Slew Rate Control

Adjust the telescope's movement speed using the RATE button. Higher rates are used for large movements, while lower rates allow for fine adjustments during observation.

PC Direct Mode and Firmware Updates

The built-in USB-B 2.0 port allows for advanced control and firmware updates. Connect the hand controller to your PC using a compatible USB cable. Refer to the Sky-Watcher website for the latest firmware and PC control software. In PC Direct Mode, the hand controller acts as a bridge, allowing PC applications to directly control the telescope mount's motors.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the surface of the hand controller. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the hand controller in a dry, cool environment, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Cable Care: Handle connection cables carefully. Avoid sharp bends or kinks that could damage the internal wiring.

Troubleshooting

Hand Controller Not Responding

  • Ensure all cables are securely connected to both the hand controller and the telescope mount.
  • Verify that the telescope mount is receiving power.
  • If specific buttons are unresponsive, a firmware issue might be present. Proceed with a firmware update.

Firmware Update Issues

  • Outdated Firmware: The hand controller may ship with an older firmware version. It is recommended to update to the latest version for optimal performance and bug fixes.
  • Update Procedure:
    1. Visit the official Sky-Watcher website to download the latest firmware loader and firmware data file (e.g., SynScan VXXXX.ssf).
    2. Connect the hand controller to your computer using the USB-B port. Note that some older computers may require a USB-to-Serial adapter and corresponding drivers.
    3. Follow the instructions provided with the firmware loader software.
  • Ensure your computer's operating system and drivers are up to date, especially for USB-to-Serial connections.

Inaccurate Go-To or Tracking

  • Re-perform the initial star alignment procedure carefully, ensuring accurate centering of alignment stars.
  • Verify that the correct date, time, and location settings are entered into the hand controller.
  • Ensure your telescope mount is properly balanced and polar aligned (for EQ mounts).
