Safety Information

WARNING: Butane gas is highly flammable. Use in a well-ventilated area. Keep away from open flames, pilot lights, and any ignition sources. Do not expose to heat or store at temperatures exceeding 50°C (120°F). Keep out of reach of children. Read all instructions before use.

  • Always wear appropriate safety glasses when operating the soldering iron.
  • Ensure the work area is clear of flammable materials.
  • Do not touch the tip or hot parts of the iron during or immediately after use. They remain hot for an extended period.
  • Allow the tool to cool completely before storing.
  • Only use high-quality butane gas for refilling.
  • Never attempt to modify the tool.
  • The iron automatically shuts off in a 'locked' position when the cap is closed, protecting you and your workspace.

Package Contents

Your Weller WLBUK75 kit includes:

  • Weller WLBUK75 Cordless Butane Soldering Iron
  • Soldering Stand
  • Desoldering Pump
  • Anti-static Tweezers
  • Flux
  • Five Soldering Tips (various types for different applications)
  • Pocket-sized Travel Case

Setup

1. Butane Refill

  1. Ensure the soldering iron is completely cool and turned off.
  2. Hold the iron upside down.
  3. Insert the nozzle of a high-quality butane gas canister into the refill valve at the base of the iron.
  4. Press firmly for approximately 10-20 seconds until the fuel tank is full. The convenient viewing window allows you to monitor the fuel level.
  5. Allow a few minutes for the gas to stabilize before ignition.

Note: For optimal performance and safety, use only premium quality butane gas. Impure gas can clog the tool.

2. Tip Installation and Change

  1. Ensure the iron is cool and turned off.
  2. Select the desired tip for your application (e.g., soldering, hot air, torch).
  3. Align the tip with the heating element and push it firmly into place. The tool-free design allows for easy tip changes.
  4. To remove a tip, gently pull it straight out. Use caution if the tip is still warm.

Operating Instructions

1. Ignition and Temperature Adjustment

  1. Ensure a tip is securely installed and the iron is adequately filled with butane.
  2. Slide the safety switch to the 'ON' position.
  3. Press the ignition button. You should hear a click and see a flame or the tip beginning to heat.
  4. Adjust the flame/heat output using the gas flow control knob (if present) to achieve the desired temperature for your task (ranging from 25W to 75W equivalent).
  5. Allow the tip to heat up for a few seconds before use.

2. Soldering Mode

  • Once the tip is hot, clean it on a damp sponge or brass wool.
  • Apply a small amount of solder to the tip to 'tin' it.
  • Place the hot tip against the components to be soldered, heating both simultaneously.
  • Apply solder to the heated joint, not directly to the iron tip. Allow the solder to flow evenly.
  • Remove the solder, then remove the iron. Allow the joint to cool undisturbed.

3. Hot Air / Torch Applications

The WLBUK75 can be easily converted for hot air or torch applications by changing the tip. Refer to the tip installation section for guidance.

  • For hot air applications (e.g., heat shrink tubing), use the appropriate hot air tip.
  • For torch applications, use the torch tip. Exercise extreme caution as the flame is exposed and very hot.

Maintenance

1. Tip Cleaning

  • Regularly clean the soldering tip using a damp sponge or brass wool to remove excess solder and oxidation.
  • Ensure the tip is tinned after cleaning to prevent oxidation.
  • Replace tips when they become excessively worn or corroded to maintain optimal performance.

2. General Care and Storage

  • Keep the tool clean and free from dust and debris.
  • Store the soldering iron in its protective travel case when not in use.
  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
  • Ensure the cap is closed and the safety switch is in the 'OFF' position before storage.

Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Iron does not ignite. No butane gas; clogged jet; faulty igniter. Refill with butane; clean the jet (refer to service manual); contact support.
Tip does not heat sufficiently. Low butane level; incorrect tip installation; clogged jet. Refill butane; re-install tip correctly; clean the jet.
Flame is inconsistent or sputters. Low butane level; air in the tank; impure butane. Refill butane; purge air from the tank (refer to service manual); use high-quality butane.
