5. Operating Modes

The KENTOKTOOL Metal Detector TX-4071 features three distinct operating modes to suit various detection needs:

  • All Metal Mode: Detects all types of metal without discrimination. This mode offers the deepest penetration and is ideal for general searching when you want to find any metallic object.
  • DISC Mode (Discrimination Mode): Allows you to eliminate unwanted metal targets (e.g., iron, foil) and focus on more valuable items. The LCD display will indicate the probable type of metal detected.
  • Pinpoint Mode: Used to accurately locate the exact position of a detected target. Once a target is found in All Metal or DISC mode, switch to Pinpoint mode to narrow down its location for easier retrieval.

6. Basic Operation

  1. Power On: Press the power button on the control box to turn on the detector.
  2. Select Mode: Use the "MODE" button to cycle through All Metal, DISC, and Pinpoint modes.
  3. Adjust Sensitivity: Use the "+" and "-" buttons to adjust the sensitivity. Higher sensitivity increases detection depth but may also increase false signals.
  4. Sweep the Coil: Hold the detector with the search coil parallel to the ground, about 1-2 inches above the surface. Sweep the coil slowly from side to side in overlapping arcs.
  5. Interpret Signals: The LCD display will show target ID and approximate depth. Audio tones will also indicate the presence and type of metal.
  6. Pinpoint Target: Once a target is detected, switch to Pinpoint mode. Move the coil slowly over the area until the strongest and most stable signal is heard/seen, indicating the target's center.

7. Adjustments

  • Sensitivity: Adjust using the "+" and "-" buttons. Start with a medium setting and increase if needed for deeper targets, or decrease if experiencing excessive false signals.
  • Volume: Control the audio output volume through the settings menu.
  • Notch: In DISC mode, the Notch function allows you to selectively ignore specific ranges of metal types. Refer to the LCD display for target ID ranges.
  • Backlight: The LCD display features a backlight for improved visibility in low-light conditions. Activate it via the settings.
  • Adjustable Stem: The stem length can be adjusted to accommodate users of different heights, ensuring comfortable operation.

8. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the search coil and stem with a damp cloth after each use, especially after use in saltwater or sandy environments. Keep the control box clean and dry.
  • Storage: Store the metal detector in a cool, dry place when not in use. If storing for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage.
  • Battery Care: Replace batteries when the low battery indicator appears on the LCD. Always use fresh, high-quality 9V batteries.

9. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No powerDead or incorrectly installed batteriesReplace batteries or ensure correct polarity.
False signals/ChatteringHigh sensitivity, electromagnetic interference, mineralized groundReduce sensitivity, move away from power lines/electronics, try ground balancing (if available).
Poor detection depthLow sensitivity, small target, deeply buried targetIncrease sensitivity, sweep slower, ensure coil is parallel to ground.
Inaccurate target IDMultiple targets, target orientation, mineralized groundSweep from different angles, use Pinpoint mode, adjust discrimination.
