4. Setup
Follow these steps to set up your OASE BioMaster 850 external filter:
- Placement: Position the filter on a stable surface below your aquarium. Ensure there is enough space for maintenance and hose connections.
- Hose Connection: Connect the intake and outlet tubing to the filter head and secure them with the provided fittings. Ensure a tight seal to prevent leaks.
- Aquarium Installation: Install the intake tube and spray bar/water distributor nozzle inside the aquarium. Position the intake away from the spray bar for optimal water circulation.
- Filter Media: The BioMaster 850 comes with pre-installed filter media. The EasyClean pre-filter module is located at the top, followed by main filter foams and Hel-X Biomedia for biological filtration.
- Heater Integration (Optional): If using an OASE HeatUp adjustable heater, insert it into the designated port within the filter canister. Ensure it is securely seated before closing the filter head.
- Priming: After connecting all hoses and ensuring the filter head is securely latched, use the simple priming button to fill the filter with water. Pump until water flows steadily through the outlet hose.
- Power Connection: Once the filter is primed and water is flowing, connect the power cable to an electrical outlet. The filter should start operating quietly.

5. Operating Instructions
The OASE BioMaster 850 is designed for continuous, quiet operation. Once set up and primed, it will effectively filter your aquarium water.
- Flow Control: Use the adjustable flow control on the inlet and outlet adapters to regulate the water flow rate according to your aquarium's needs.
- Quiet Operation: The filter's sound-dampening design ensures minimal noise during operation.
- Heater Function (if installed): If an OASE HeatUp heater is integrated, it will maintain a consistent water temperature, reducing the need for in-tank heating equipment.
6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and efficiency of your BioMaster 850 filter.
- EasyClean Pre-Filter Maintenance: The EasyClean pre-filter module can be removed and cleaned separately without disassembling the entire filter. This reduces the frequency of full filter cleanings. Simply unlock and pull out the module, rinse the pre-filter foams under tap water, and reinsert.
- Full Filter Cleaning: Periodically, the main filter media will require cleaning. Disconnect the power, use the Aquastop feature to seal the hoses, and remove the filter unit. Disassemble the filter head, remove the media baskets, and rinse the main filter foams and Hel-X Biomedia in old aquarium water to preserve beneficial bacteria.
- Aquastop Feature: The Aquastop mechanism allows you to disconnect the filter from the hoses without water leakage, making maintenance cleaner and easier.

7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your BioMaster 850, consider the following:
- Reduced Flow: Check if the pre-filter or main filter media are clogged and require cleaning. Ensure hoses are not kinked or obstructed.
- Unusual Noise: Verify that the filter is properly primed and free of trapped air. Ensure the impeller is clean and free from debris.
- Leaks: Check all hose connections and O-rings for proper seating and damage. Ensure the filter head is securely latched.
- Filter Not Starting: Confirm the power cable is securely plugged in and the electrical outlet is functional. Check for any blockages in the impeller area.
For persistent issues, refer to the detailed troubleshooting guide on the OASE website or contact customer support.
