3. Setup Guide

Follow these steps to set up your Protectli Vault:

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove the Protectli Vault and all accessories from the packaging. Verify that all components listed in Figure 2.5 are present.
  2. Power Connection: Connect the provided power adapter to the DC 12V input port on the front panel of the Vault (refer to Figure 2.2). Plug the power cord into a suitable electrical outlet.
  3. Network Connections:
    • Identify the WAN (Wide Area Network) port, typically used for your internet connection. Connect your modem or upstream router to this port using an Ethernet cable.
    • Connect your internal network devices (e.g., switch, computer) to the LAN (Local Area Network) port or any of the OPT1-OPT4 ports as required by your network configuration.
  4. Initial Configuration Access:
    • For initial setup and operating system installation, connect a monitor to the HDMI port and a keyboard/mouse to the USB 3.0 ports on the rear panel (refer to Figure 2.3).
    • Alternatively, for headless setup, connect a serial console cable to the COM port and use a terminal emulator on another computer.
  5. Power On: Press the power button located on the rear panel to turn on the device.
  6. Operating System Installation: The Protectli Vault does not come with a pre-installed operating system. You will need to install your preferred firewall or networking OS (e.g., pfSense CE, OPNsense, untangle) from a USB drive or network source. Refer to the specific OS documentation for installation instructions.

4. Operating Instructions

Once the operating system is installed and configured, the Protectli Vault will function according to the software's capabilities. Here are general operating guidelines:

  • Power On/Off: Use the power button on the rear panel for normal power cycles. For a clean shutdown, always use the operating system's shutdown function before pressing the power button.
  • Status Indicators: Observe the LED indicators on the front panel for network activity and system status. Consult your installed OS documentation for specific LED behavior.
  • Network Configuration: All network configurations, including IP addresses, firewall rules, and routing, are managed through the installed operating system's interface. Access this interface via a web browser from a connected computer or directly via the console.
  • Software Updates: Regularly update your chosen operating system and any installed packages to ensure optimal performance, security, and access to the latest features.

5. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and reliable operation of your Protectli Vault:

  • Cleaning: Keep the device free from dust. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the exterior. Avoid using liquid cleaners directly on the device. Due to its fanless design, internal dust accumulation is minimized, but ensure ventilation fins are clear.
  • Ventilation: Although fanless, the Vault relies on its heatsink chassis for heat dissipation. Ensure adequate airflow around the device. Do not block the ventilation fins.
  • Environmental Conditions: Operate the device within recommended temperature and humidity ranges. Avoid extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, and high humidity.
  • Firmware Updates: Periodically check the Protectli website for BIOS/firmware updates. Follow manufacturer instructions carefully when performing firmware updates.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Protectli Vault, consider the following troubleshooting steps:

  • No Power:
    • Verify the power adapter is securely connected to both the Vault and a working electrical outlet.
    • Test the outlet with another device.
    • Ensure the power button has been pressed.
  • No Network Connectivity:
    • Check that Ethernet cables are securely connected to the correct ports (WAN, LAN, OPT).
    • Observe the link/activity LEDs on the Ethernet ports. If they are off, check the cable or the connected device.
    • Verify network configuration within your installed operating system.
    • Restart the Vault and connected network devices.
  • System Not Booting/Display Issues:
    • Ensure a monitor is properly connected to the HDMI port and is powered on.
    • If using a serial console, verify the cable connection and terminal emulator settings (baud rate, data bits, parity, stop bits).
    • If the device powers on but does not display, try reseating RAM modules if you have opened the chassis (refer to advanced guides on the Protectli website).
  • Software-Related Issues:
    • Most issues related to network functionality (e.g., routing, firewall rules, VPN) are software-dependent. Consult the documentation for your specific operating system.
    • Consider reinstalling the operating system if software corruption is suspected.
