Operating Instructions

1. Lighting the Charcoal

  • Place charcoal briquettes or lump charcoal onto the charcoal grate within the charcoal container.
  • Use an approved charcoal starter fluid or chimney starter to ignite the charcoal. Allow the charcoal to ash over (turn gray) before placing food on the grates.

2. Direct Grilling

For direct grilling, food is cooked directly over the hot charcoal. This method is ideal for searing meats, grilling burgers, sausages, and vegetables that cook quickly.

  • Spread the lit charcoal evenly across the charcoal grate.
  • Place the cooking grate directly above the charcoal.
  • Place food on the cooking grate. Keep the lid open or closed as desired for cooking.

3. Indirect Grilling and Smoking

For indirect grilling or smoking, charcoal is placed on one side or around the edges of the charcoal grate, and food is placed on the cooking grate away from direct heat. This method is suitable for larger cuts of meat, poultry, or for smoking.

  • Arrange lit charcoal to one side or in a ring around the perimeter of the charcoal grate.
  • Place a drip pan (not included) under the area where food will be placed to catch drippings.
  • Place food on the cooking grate over the drip pan, away from the direct heat source.
  • Close the lid to allow heat and smoke to circulate, cooking the food evenly.

4. Air Ventilation Control

The grill features 4 air vents that can be opened or closed to control airflow and temperature. More open vents increase airflow, leading to higher temperatures. Closing vents reduces airflow, lowering temperatures and extending charcoal burn time.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning

  • After Each Use: Once the grill has cooled completely, remove the cooking grates and charcoal container. Scrape off any food residue from the grates using a grill brush.
  • Ash Disposal: Empty the charcoal container of ashes. The charcoal container is removable for easy cleaning.

  • Washing: Wash grates and the charcoal container with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely to prevent rust.
  • Exterior: Wipe down the exterior surfaces of the grill with a damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners that could damage the finish.

2. Storage

  • Store the grill in a dry, covered area when not in use, especially during inclement weather, to protect it from the elements and prolong its lifespan.
  • Consider using a grill cover for added protection.

Troubleshooting

  • Problem: Charcoal not lighting or staying lit.
Solution: Ensure sufficient airflow by opening all air vents. Use a proper charcoal starter. Avoid overcrowding charcoal.
  • Problem: Grill temperature is too low.
Solution: Open air vents fully to increase airflow. Add more charcoal if necessary. Ensure the lid is closed for indirect cooking/smoking.
  • Problem: Grill temperature is too high.
Solution: Partially close air vents to reduce airflow. Avoid using too much charcoal.
  • Problem: Food sticking to grates.
Solution: Ensure grates are clean before use. Lightly oil the grates before placing food. Allow the grill to preheat properly.
