1. Introduction and Overview
The Laguna JX|12 ShearTec II Jointer is engineered for precision woodworking, offering enhanced safety features and superior performance. This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient operation, setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your jointer.

Figure 1: Front view of the Laguna JX|12 ShearTec II Jointer. This image shows the overall design of the jointer, including the main body, tables, fence, and control panel.
Key Features:
- ShearTec II Cutterhead: Features a 6-row carbide insert cutterhead for superior surface finish on various wood types. The T-step design of knives and fasteners maximizes clamping force, preventing knife cracking and chatter. Four-sided carbide insert knives produce a shear cut and can be rotated for new cutting edges without a setting jig.
- Emergency "Knee-Stop": A body-length bar at knee height allows for rapid shutdown of the machine, enhancing operator safety.
- Parallelogram Table Adjustments: Table depth adjustments maintain consistent distance to the cutterhead throughout their travel.
- In-feed Support Roller: Infeed tables are equipped with pull-out support rollers to assist with longer materials.
- Deluxe Fence: A 5-¾” fence with a flip-down small fence for intricate work.
- Built-in Outlet: Provides power for optional LED work lights.
2. Safety Instructions
Always prioritize safety when operating power tools. Read and understand all instructions before use. Failure to follow safety guidelines can result in serious injury.
General Safety Precautions:
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, and dust mask.
- Ensure the work area is clean, well-lit, and free of obstructions.
- Keep children and bystanders away from the machine during operation.
- Never operate the jointer under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- Disconnect power before performing any maintenance, adjustments, or when changing knives.
- Always use push sticks or push blocks when jointing small or narrow workpieces.
- Do not wear loose clothing, jewelry, or long hair that could get caught in moving parts.
Specific Safety Features:
- Emergency Knee-Stop Bar: This feature allows for rapid shutdown of the machine. In an emergency, press the knee-stop bar with your knee to immediately cut power to the jointer. This is designed for quick access without removing hands from the workpiece.
- Redesigned Toe-Kick: Allows the operator to position themselves closer to the machine table, improving stability and safety while moving along the length of the machine.
3. Setup
Proper setup is crucial for optimal performance and safety.
Unpacking and Placement:
- Carefully unpack the jointer and inspect for any shipping damage. Report any damage immediately to the carrier and supplier.
- Place the jointer on a level, stable surface capable of supporting its weight (approximately 1043 pounds).
- Ensure adequate clearance around the machine for safe operation and material handling, especially for long workpieces.
Electrical Connection:
- The Laguna JX|12 ShearTec II Jointer requires a 220V, 1-phase power supply. Ensure your electrical system meets these requirements.
- Connect the jointer to a dedicated, properly grounded circuit. Consult a qualified electrician if unsure.
Table and Fence Adjustments:

Figure 2: Close-up view of the fence angle adjustment mechanism. This image highlights the scale for setting the fence angle.
- In-feed Table Adjustment: Use the handwheel (see Figure 3) to adjust the depth of cut. The parallelogram design ensures the table maintains consistent distance to the cutterhead.
- Fence Adjustment: The deluxe fence can be angled for bevel cuts. Use the locking mechanism (see Figure 4) to secure the fence at the desired angle. The flip-down small fence can be used for intricate work.
- In-feed Support Rollers: Extend the pull-out support rollers from the in-feed table when working with longer stock to provide additional support and stability.

4. Operating Instructions
Follow these steps for safe and effective jointing operations.
Before Operation:
- Ensure all guards are in place and functioning correctly.
- Verify the depth of cut is set appropriately for your material and desired outcome.
- Check that the fence is square to the table (unless a bevel cut is intended) and securely locked.
- Clear the work area of any debris or loose items.
Jointing Procedure:
- Turn on the jointer. Allow the cutterhead to reach full speed before feeding material.
- Place the workpiece flat on the in-feed table, with the edge to be jointed against the fence.
- Apply firm, even pressure to the workpiece, pushing it smoothly across the cutterhead. Use push sticks or push blocks as necessary, especially for short or narrow pieces.
- Maintain consistent feed rate. Do not force the material.
- Once the workpiece has passed completely over the cutterhead and onto the out-feed table, release pressure.
- Repeat passes as needed until the desired surface or edge is achieved.
Using the Built-in Outlet:

The jointer includes a built-in outlet (Figure 6) for powering optional accessories such as LED work lights. Ensure any connected accessories do not exceed the outlet's rated capacity.
5. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Laguna JX|12 ShearTec II Jointer.
Cutterhead Knife Rotation:
- The ShearTec II cutterhead uses 4-sided carbide insert knives. When one edge becomes dull, you can rotate the knife to expose a new, sharp cutting edge.
- Procedure:
- Disconnect the jointer from the power supply.
- Access the cutterhead area. Refer to your jointer's specific instructions for guard removal.
- Using the appropriate tool, loosen the fastener holding the dull knife.
- Carefully rotate the knife to an unused sharp edge.
- Securely tighten the fastener. Ensure the knife is properly seated in the T-step design.
- Repeat for all knives as needed.
- Reinstall all guards before restoring power.
- The 4-sided design allows for multiple rotations before replacement knives are needed.
General Cleaning and Lubrication:
- Regularly clean dust and wood chips from the machine, especially around the cutterhead, tables, and fence mechanisms.
- Apply a thin coat of rust preventative or paste wax to the cast iron tables to prevent corrosion and ensure smooth material feeding.
- Lubricate moving parts, such as the table adjustment mechanisms, according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
6. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your jointer.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Rough or tear-out finish on workpiece | Dull or chipped cutterhead knives; incorrect feed rate; grain direction issues. | Rotate or replace cutterhead knives. Adjust feed rate. Ensure proper grain direction. |
| Machine does not start | No power supply; emergency stop engaged; tripped circuit breaker. | Check power connection. Disengage emergency knee-stop. Reset circuit breaker. |
| Uneven jointing or tapered cuts | Fence not square to table; out-feed table not level with cutterhead; warped workpiece. | Adjust fence to be square. Verify out-feed table height. Ensure workpiece is not excessively warped. |
| Excessive vibration or noise | Loose components; unbalanced cutterhead; worn bearings. | Check and tighten all fasteners. Inspect cutterhead for debris. Contact support for bearing issues. |
