  2. Open the top lid, which serves as the easel surface.
  3. Adjust the angle of the easel surface by selecting one of the four available angle settings.
  4. Pull out the storage drawer located beneath the easel surface to access compartments for paints, brushes, and other small accessories.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1. Using Paints

Your kit includes acrylic, oil, and watercolor paints, each with unique properties. Always squeeze a small amount of paint onto a palette (wooden or plastic) for mixing. Use the included color mixing wheel as a guide for color theory and blending.

  • Acrylic Paints: Fast-drying, water-soluble when wet, and water-resistant when dry. Can be used on various surfaces including canvas, paper, and wood. Clean brushes with water immediately after use.
  • Oil Paints: Slow-drying, allowing for extended blending time. Requires appropriate solvents (not included) for thinning and brush cleaning. Use on oil paper pads or stretched canvases.
  • Watercolor Paints: Transparent and water-soluble. Best used on watercolor paper pads. Apply in thin washes for luminous effects. Clean brushes with water.

4.2. Using Brushes

The kit provides specific brushes for each paint type to optimize performance. Select the appropriate brush size and shape for your desired detail or coverage. The palette knives can be used for mixing paints or applying thick textures directly to the canvas.

  • Acrylic Brushes: Made with high-quality nylon hair, offering smooth strokes and excellent spring.
  • Oil Brushes: Feature stiff hog bristles, providing firm control and rich texture for oil applications.
  • Watercolor Brushes: Crafted with soft animal hair for superior absorbency, delicate blending, and smooth washes.

4.3. Painting Surfaces

Choose your surface based on the medium you are using. All canvases and paper pads are acid-free.

  • Stretched Canvases & Canvas Panels: Ideal for acrylic and oil paints. The canvas panels are rigid and suitable for various techniques.
  • Acrylic Paper Pad: Designed for acrylic and oil painting, offering a sturdy surface.
  • Oil Paper Pad: Specifically formulated for oil painting, preventing oil absorption and maintaining paint integrity.
  • Watercolor Paper Pad: Optimized for watercolor techniques and mixed media, ensuring superior absorbency and preventing buckling.

5. Maintenance

5.1. Brush Care

  • Acrylic & Watercolor Brushes: Clean immediately after use with warm water and mild soap. Gently reshape bristles and allow to air dry flat or brush-side down to prevent water from seeping into the ferrule.
  • Oil Brushes: Clean with appropriate art solvents (e.g., mineral spirits, not included) to remove oil paint, then wash thoroughly with soap and water. Reshape and dry.
  • Avoid letting paint dry in the bristles, as this can permanently damage the brush.

5.2. Palette Care

  • Clean plastic palettes with water and soap for acrylics and watercolors. For oil paints, scrape off excess paint and clean with a solvent.
  • Wooden palettes can be scraped clean. For oil paints, a thin layer of linseed oil can be applied periodically to condition the wood and prevent paint from soaking in.

5.3. Easel Care

  • Wipe down aluminum and wood easels with a damp cloth to remove any paint or dust.
  • Ensure all knobs and fasteners are tightened before and after use to maintain stability.
  • Store the aluminum easel in its carry bag when not in use to protect it during transport.

6. Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Acrylic paint drying too quickly on palette/brush Warm environment, thin application, or paint exposed to air for too long. Add a small amount of water or acrylic retarder (not included) to the paint. Work in a cooler environment or use a stay-wet palette. Keep paint tubes capped when not in use.
Brushes becoming stiff or damaged Paint dried in bristles, improper cleaning, or incorrect storage. Clean brushes immediately after use. For dried acrylics, soak in warm water with brush cleaner. For oils, use appropriate solvent. Store brushes upright or flat after drying.
Watercolor paper buckling or warping Excessive water application, insufficient paper weight, or not properly stretched. Use less water or apply washes in layers, allowing drying time between. Ensure you are using the correct watercolor paper pad (140 LB) which is designed to handle water. For heavy washes, consider stretching the paper.
Easel instability or wobbling Legs not fully extended or tightened, uneven floor surface, or canvas not properly secured. Ensure all leg clamps and knobs on the tripod easel are securely tightened. Place the easel on a flat, stable surface. Verify the canvas is firmly held by both the top holder and the tray.
