Setup and Connections

Follow these steps to correctly connect your solar panel and battery to the CN3791 charge controller board.

  1. Identify Connectors: The board has two sets of JST PH2.0 connectors. One set is labeled "SOLAR IN" for the solar panel, and the other is labeled "BAT+" and "BAT-" for the lithium battery.
  2. Connect Solar Panel: Insert the solar panel's JST PH2.0 connector into the "SOLAR IN" port. Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -).
  3. Connect Battery: Insert the lithium battery's JST PH2.0 connector into the "BAT+" and "BAT-" ports. Again, observe correct polarity.
  4. Optional Load Connection: The board also provides output terminals for a 3.7V load, allowing the battery to power a device while being charged.

Operating Instructions

Once connected, the CN3791 module operates automatically to charge your lithium battery.

  • Automatic MPPT: The integrated CN3791 chip continuously tracks the maximum power point of the solar panel. This ensures that the maximum available power is harvested from the solar panel and converted into charging current for the battery, even under varying light conditions.
  • Charging Process: When the solar panel receives sufficient light, the module will begin charging the connected 3.7V lithium battery. The charging status may be indicated by onboard LEDs (refer to specific board markings if present).
  • Overcharge Protection: The module is designed to prevent overcharging of the lithium battery, extending its lifespan.

Maintenance

The CN3791 solar charge controller board requires minimal maintenance to ensure long-term performance.

  • Keep Clean: Ensure the board is free from dust, dirt, and moisture. Use a soft, dry brush or cloth for cleaning if necessary.
  • Environmental Protection: Operate the module within its specified temperature and humidity ranges. Avoid exposure to extreme conditions or corrosive environments.
  • Inspect Connections: Periodically check all JST PH2.0 connections to ensure they are secure and free from corrosion.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your CN3791 solar charge controller, consider the following troubleshooting steps:

  • No Charging Indication:
    • Verify that the solar panel is receiving sufficient sunlight.
    • Check all connections (solar panel to board, battery to board) for proper seating and polarity.
    • Ensure the solar panel voltage is appropriate for the 12V input requirement of the board.
    • Confirm the battery is a compatible 3.7V lithium battery.
  • Low Charging Current:
    • Ensure the solar panel is clean and free from obstructions.
    • Check for any damage to the solar panel or connecting wires.
    • Verify that the solar panel's power output matches the board's capabilities.
  • Board Overheating:
    • Ensure adequate ventilation around the board.
    • Verify that the input voltage and current from the solar panel do not exceed the board's maximum ratings.
