1. Introduction

2. Important Safety Instructions

When using electrical appliances, basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and/or injury to persons, including the following:

  • Read all instructions.
  • Do not touch hot surfaces. Use handles or knobs.
  • To protect against fire, electric shock, and injury to persons, do not immerse cord, plugs, or appliance in water or other liquid.
  • Close supervision is necessary when any appliance is used by or near children.
  • Unplug from outlet when not in use and before cleaning. Allow to cool before putting on or taking off parts, and before cleaning the appliance.

4. Setup and First Use

4.1 Unpacking

Carefully remove the coffee machine and all its components from the packaging. Retain the packaging for future storage or transport. Check for any damage during transit.

4.2 Initial Cleaning

Before first use, clean all removable parts (portafilter, filter baskets, drip tray, water tank) with warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry. Wipe the exterior of the machine with a damp cloth.

4.3 Filling the Water Tank

  1. Remove the water tank from the back or side of the machine.
  2. Fill the tank with fresh, cold water up to the MAX level indicator. Do not exceed the maximum fill line.
  3. Place the water tank back securely into its position.

4.4 Priming the Machine (First Use)

To ensure proper operation and remove any air from the system, prime the machine before brewing your first coffee:

  1. Ensure the water tank is filled.
  2. Place a large container under the steam wand and the portafilter (without coffee).
  3. Plug the machine into a grounded electrical outlet.
  4. Press the power button to turn on the machine. The indicator light will illuminate.
  5. Once the machine has heated up (indicator light stops flashing or turns solid), activate the steam function to release water through the steam wand for about 30 seconds.
  6. Then, activate the coffee brewing function to release water through the portafilter for about 30 seconds.
  7. Turn off the machine. Your machine is now primed and ready for use.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Making Espresso

  1. Prepare the Portafilter: Insert the desired filter basket (single or double shot) into the portafilter.
  2. Add Ground Coffee: Fill the filter basket with finely ground espresso coffee. Use a measuring spoon for accurate dosing.

  4. Tamp the Coffee: Use a tamper to press the coffee grounds firmly and evenly. This creates a compact puck for optimal extraction.
  5. Attach Portafilter: Insert the portafilter into the brewing head of the machine and turn it firmly to the right until it is securely locked.
  6. Place Cup: Place one or two espresso cups on the drip tray directly under the portafilter spouts.
  7. Brew Espresso: Ensure the machine is heated. Press the espresso brewing button. The machine will start extracting coffee.

  9. Stop Brewing: Press the espresso brewing button again to stop the flow once the desired volume is reached.
  10. Remove Portafilter: Carefully remove the portafilter by turning it to the left. Dispose of the used coffee grounds.

5.2 Frothing Milk (Steam Function)

  1. Prepare Milk: Fill a stainless steel frothing pitcher with cold milk (dairy or non-dairy) up to one-third full.
  2. Activate Steam: Press the steam button on the control panel. Wait for the steam indicator light to illuminate steadily, indicating the machine has reached steaming temperature.
  3. Purge Steam Wand: Briefly open the steam knob to release any condensed water from the wand into an empty cup. Close the knob.
  4. Froth Milk: Immerse the tip of the steam wand just below the surface of the milk. Open the steam knob slowly. Move the pitcher up and down to create foam.
  5. Stop Steaming: Once the milk reaches the desired temperature and consistency, close the steam knob and remove the pitcher.
  6. Clean Steam Wand: Immediately wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth to remove any milk residue. Briefly open the steam knob again to clear any milk from inside the wand.

6. Maintenance and Cleaning

Regular cleaning and maintenance will prolong the life of your Solac CE4480 and ensure consistent coffee quality.

6.1 Daily Cleaning

  • Portafilter and Filter Baskets: After each use, remove the portafilter, discard coffee grounds, and rinse the portafilter and filter basket under warm water.
  • Drip Tray: Empty and rinse the drip tray daily or when the indicator floats up.
  • Steam Wand: As mentioned in section 5.2, clean immediately after each use.
  • Exterior: Wipe the exterior of the machine with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or immerse the machine in water.

6.2 Descaling

Mineral deposits from water can build up inside the machine, affecting performance and taste. Descale your machine every 2-3 months, or more frequently if you have hard water.

  1. Use a commercial descaling solution specifically designed for coffee machines, following the manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Fill the water tank with the descaling solution mixed with water as per instructions.
  3. Place a large container under the portafilter and steam wand.
  4. Run several cycles of brewing and steaming to allow the solution to pass through the machine.
  5. After descaling, rinse the water tank thoroughly and fill it with fresh water. Run several cycles of fresh water through the machine to flush out any remaining descaling solution.

7. Troubleshooting
