2. Safety Information

Always adhere to local and national safety codes. Use personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent shock and arc blast injury. Read and understand all safety instructions before using the Fluke 378FC. This device is rated for CAT III 1000V and CAT IV 600V.

  • Do not use the meter if it is damaged or operating abnormally.
  • Ensure test leads and probes are in good condition before use.
  • Always connect the black test lead to a suitable electrical ground when using FieldSense™ technology to ensure accurate voltage readings.
  • Do not apply more than the rated voltage, as marked on the meter, between the terminals or between any terminal and earth ground.
  • Use caution when working with voltages above 30 V AC RMS, 42 V peak, or 60 V DC. These voltages pose a shock hazard.

4. Setup

4.1 Battery Installation

The Fluke 378FC requires two (2) AA batteries, which are included. To install or replace batteries:

  1. Ensure the meter is turned OFF.
  2. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the meter.
  3. Use a screwdriver to loosen the screw(s) securing the cover.
  4. Remove the cover and insert the AA batteries, observing correct polarity.
  5. Replace the cover and tighten the screw(s).

4.2 Connecting Test Leads and iFlex Probe

For standard voltage, resistance, and continuity measurements, insert the red test lead into the VΩ input jack and the black test lead into the COM input jack. For current measurements using the iFlex flexible current probe:

  1. Ensure the meter is turned OFF.
  2. Connect the iFlex probe's connector to the dedicated iFlex input jack on the meter.
  3. Securely fasten the iFlex probe around the conductor to be measured.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 FieldSense™ Non-Contact Voltage and Current

FieldSense™ technology allows for voltage and current measurements without direct contact with live conductors, enhancing safety.

  1. Turn the rotary dial to the FieldSense™ position (indicated by the symbol).
  2. Connect the black test lead to a reliable electrical ground point.
  3. Place the clamp jaw around the conductor you wish to measure.
  4. The display will show the voltage and current readings.

5.2 True-RMS AC/DC Measurements

The 378FC provides True-RMS measurements for accurate readings on both linear and non-linear loads.

  • Voltage (V): Select the V∼ (AC) or V— (DC) setting. Connect test leads in parallel with the circuit.
  • Current (A): Select the A∼ (AC) or A— (DC) setting. Open the clamp jaw and place it around a single conductor. For iFlex, ensure it is properly connected and wrapped around the conductor.
  • Resistance (Ω): Select the Ω setting. Ensure the circuit is de-energized. Connect test leads across the component.
  • Continuity: Select the continuity setting. Ensure the circuit is de-energized. Connect test leads across the circuit or component. An audible tone indicates continuity.

5.3 Power Quality (PQ) Indicator

The PQ indicator helps identify power quality issues. When activated, it monitors for anomalies in current, voltage, or power factor.

  1. Turn the rotary dial to a measurement function that supports PQ (e.g., FieldSense™).
  2. Press the PQ button to activate the indicator.
  3. The meter will display an indication if power quality issues are detected.

5.4 3-Phase Measurements

The 378FC simplifies 3-phase voltage and current measurements. Refer to the on-screen prompts or the Fluke Connect app for guided measurements.

5.5 In-rush Current Logging

The in-rush current logging feature captures the initial surge of current when equipment starts up, which is crucial for motor troubleshooting.

  1. Select the In-rush function on the meter.
  2. Initiate the equipment startup. The meter will automatically capture and display the peak in-rush current.

5.6 Fluke Connect App Integration

The Fluke 378FC can connect wirelessly to the Fluke Connect mobile app, allowing for remote viewing, data logging, and sharing of measurements.

  1. Download and install the Fluke Connect app on your compatible smartphone.
  2. Enable Bluetooth on your smartphone and the 378FC.
  3. Pair the meter with the app following the on-screen instructions.
  4. Use the app to view live readings, log data, and generate reports.
