5.2 Connecting to Radio and Antenna/Dummy Load

The SW-33 Plus comes with various adapters to facilitate connection to different radio and antenna types. Ensure you use the correct adapters for a secure connection.

  1. Connect your two-way radio to the bottom port labeled 'To Radio' on the SW-33 Plus meter. Use an appropriate adapter if necessary.
  2. Connect your antenna or a 50Ω dummy load to the top port labeled 'ANT./50Ω Load'. Use an appropriate adapter if necessary.
  3. Ensure all connections are finger-tight to prevent signal loss and ensure accurate readings.

6. Operation

6.1 Powering On and Off

6.2 Display Modes

Briefly press the red 'on/off' button to cycle through the available display modes:

Five different display modes of the Surecom SW-33 Plus SWR and Power Meter: Power On ALL Mode, 90 degree rotated mode, 180 degree rotated mode, VSWR Mode, and FW Power Mode.

6.3 Measuring SWR and Power

Follow these steps to accurately measure the SWR and power output of your radio and antenna system:

  1. Select SWR Mode: Power on the device and cycle through the display modes until you reach the desired SWR display (e.g., ALL Mode or VSWR Mode).
  2. Position Antenna: Place the antenna vertically and ensure there are no significant obstacles or metal objects nearby that could interfere with the measurement.
  3. Ensure Ground Plane: For handheld radios, it is critical to touch the metal box of the SWR meter with your hands during measurement. This provides the necessary counterpoise for accurate readings.
  4. Transmit: Briefly press the Push-To-Talk (PTT) button on your two-way radio to transmit. Observe the readings on the SW-33 Plus display.
  5. Interpret Readings:
    • VSWR: A value closer to 1.0 indicates a better match between the radio and antenna, signifying efficient power transfer. Higher values indicate a mismatch.
    • FW W (Forward Power): The power transmitted from your radio towards the antenna.
    • RW W (Reflected Power): The power reflected back from the antenna to the radio due to impedance mismatch. Lower reflected power is desirable.

8. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Device does not power on.Low or depleted battery.Charge the device using the Micro USB cable.
Inaccurate SWR/Power readings.
  • Loose or incorrect connections.
  • Improper ground plane (for handhelds).
  • Antenna interference.
  • Incorrect dummy load used.
  • Ensure all adapters and cables are securely connected.
  • Hold the metal case of the meter during measurement.
  • Move away from large metal objects or other RF sources.
  • Verify the dummy load's power rating and impedance (50Ω).
