Operating Your Telescope

Using the StarSense Explorer App

The StarSense Explorer app is central to the operation of your telescope. It uses patented sky recognition technology to guide you to celestial objects.

  1. Download the App: Download the StarSense Explorer app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
  2. Dock Your Smartphone: Securely place your smartphone into the StarSense phone dock on the telescope.
  3. Launch and Align: Launch the app and follow the on-screen instructions to align your phone with the telescope optics. The app analyzes star patterns to pinpoint the telescope's exact position in real-time.
  4. Select a Target: The app will generate a curated list of the best objects to view based on your current time and location. Select an object from this list.
  5. Navigate to Target: Follow the on-screen arrows in the app to manually move your telescope towards the selected object. When the bullseye turns green, your target is centered in the eyepiece.
  6. Observe: Look through the eyepiece to view the celestial object. Use the focuser knob to achieve a sharp image.

Eyepiece Usage and Magnification

Your telescope comes with two eyepieces: a 25mm and a 10mm. The 25mm eyepiece provides lower magnification and a wider field of view, ideal for locating objects and observing larger celestial bodies like the Moon. The 10mm eyepiece offers higher magnification for more detailed views of planets and smaller deep-sky objects.

Two images showing the Moon viewed through different eyepieces: a 25mm eyepiece for 50x magnification and a 10mm eyepiece for 125x magnification.

Maintenance and Care

Proper care and maintenance will ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your telescope.

  • Cleaning Optics: Use a soft, lint-free cloth specifically designed for optical surfaces. Avoid touching the optical surfaces with your fingers. For stubborn smudges, use a specialized optical cleaning fluid sparingly.
  • Storage: Store the telescope in a dry, dust-free environment. Keep all lens caps on when not in use to protect the optics.
  • Handling: Always handle the telescope by its main tube or mount, avoiding direct contact with the lenses or mirrors.
  • Environmental Exposure: Avoid exposing the telescope to extreme temperatures, humidity, or direct sunlight for prolonged periods.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your telescope, consider the following common solutions:

  • Blurry Images: Ensure the focuser knob is adjusted correctly. Atmospheric conditions can also affect image clarity.
  • Difficulty Finding Objects: Re-calibrate the StarSense app and ensure your phone is securely docked. Verify the finderscope is properly aligned with the main telescope.
  • App Not Connecting/Working: Check your smartphone's compatibility (iPhone 6 and up, most Android phones from 2016 or later running Android 7.1.2 or newer). Ensure the app is updated to the latest version.
  • Shaky View: Ensure the tripod is set up on a stable, level surface. Tighten all knobs and screws on the mount and tripod.
